Film Name Changes

Recently, we've had a few films that have had different names in the UK than in the US.

For example... American Pie : The Wedding was called American Wedding in the USA

and Heath Ledgers and Brian "A Knights Tale" Helgerland's new film The Sin Eater is called "The Order" in the United States...

Why is this? What is the point in having to rename a movie just to reprint and design more posters and logos. If the advertising is good enough, surely we'll get the jist of the film without having to rename it?!

Licence to Kill

The film was originally entitled Licence Revoked, but this was changed late in the day when it became apparent that many in the U.S. audience associated the title with having one's driving licence taken away, also because it was said that some audiences didn't know what the word 'revoked' meant!
 
Too many Americans got confused and thought it was a film about that singer who dates Simon Cowell and sang "So Macho".

The best one was "The Madness of King George" - originally to be called "The Madness of King George The Third", they dropped the last bit as (again) Americans were looking for parts one and two!
 
American Wedding was renamed for the UK market because execs were worried that the general public would confuse the title "American Wedding" with a "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" style chick-flick rom-com... and not a gross-out comedy.
 
The Longest Yard was renamed to The Mean Machine for the UK. I would assume because the US title is American football jargon that we Brits don't understand.
