When deciding what film to watch how much does the genre of film influence you?

Are there certain genres you just won't watch?

I have my favourite genres but I won't exclude a film because it has been categorised in one of least favoured genres.

I was going to make a simplified list of the genres and try to pick my favourite film related to that genre but it got a little complicated with sub-genres, croos genre films etc. and there were a few genres I just couldn't pick a film from.

Maybe when i have more time (ie, not in work with the boss hovering around in the background) I will have a good think about this but for now, over to everyone on RAB.
 
i would have to say that the genre does influence me, it's not down to the fact that i won't watch a particular genre but more down to the mood i am in. Sometimes i have to watch a comedy and only a comedy and sometimes a horror..it all depenRAB how i feel but if i am in the mood for a particular genre then that is all i will consider i will not even look outside that type of film.

Fave genre's - Comedy and Horror, fave films in those genres - Comedy - Beerfest or Big Lebowski
- Horror - The Crow, Near Dark or Hellraiser 2
 
I'll try any film so long as it looks interesting and has been recommended by people whose opinion I trust. But I draw the line at teen films like Highschool Musical. I'm in my late 30s and watching films like that would be just...wrong.
 
Here's a basic list of the main genres (feel free to add to it). I'e indicated my favourite film in that genre (mostly fairly predictable i'm afraid).

Some of my films overlap genres and i cannot pick a film in the Romance category. I also reserve the right to chane my mind when people mention films that i haven't thought of:)
 
Urgh, torture porn isn't a film genre...

There are film genres I will go and see more when there is a choice over another genre of film, so if there was a Horror on and a Comedy I would like to see on at the same time then I would probably choose the Horror film first to rush and see.

The only type of film I rarely bother with is things like American Pie.
 
I judge a film on it's overall quality rather than a particular genre.Saying that,if I see films being advertised as a costume drama,rom-com,or teen/chick flick,I tend to give it a wide berth.But then I may tape them when they are on TV and quite enjoy the occasional one.

The only 'genre' I've never seen is a Bollywood movie,and I have no desire to ever do so.I have nothing against foreign language film,I actually watch quite a few,but all the Bollywood clips I've ever seen all look exactly the same.
 
Why is torture porn not a genre? A genre is just a group of films (books, albums, paintings, whatever) that share certain characteristics, styles and themes.

Are you saying films like the Saw series or the Hostel series don't share certain themes that set them apart from other horror films?
 
I always check out reviews before watching a film, whatever the genre.
If it is action, sci fi or horror and gets middling or worse reviews, I won't watch because they are my least fave genres, and only a really good one would interest me. Oh, and comedy too because hardly any films make me laugh. And romcom.
 
That's just splitting hairs. Whether you like the title "torture porn" or not, that type of film is clearly defined enough to be separated from other horror films.

Sure, they're a sub-genre of horror movies in the wider sense, but they can still be viewed as a distinct category in their own right. You could hardly say any of the Saw movies are in the same genre as the Exorcist or the Silence of the Lambs.
 
The films you mentioned all fall under a genre or mix of genres already placed in film theory. Films can overlap/mix like someone mentioned already.

I'm not disagreeing when it comes to the different from other films in the same genre and so on.
 
Fair enough. I only singled out those films in particular in response to the OP's question. I quite like horror films that focus on the psychological, suspense side of things, but tend to steer well clear of horror films that feature excessive violence.
 
I like; Drama's/ Thrillers

Comedies and sometimes horrors.


I used to love horror films when I was younger but now I'm over eighteen they just don't seem fun anymore!

I'm not particularly keen on action films.The only one I liked was 'Face Off'.

I'll watch any genre but the discs I buy are about 90% SF/Fantasy/Horror.

Other than those genres my preferred viewing would be film noir & westerns. And European arthouse, if that counts as a genre.
