It was filmed like this. But test audiences hated the ending so it had to be re-filmed.
Just like the original ending of Fatal Attraction had to be refilmed from Glenn Close's suicide with Michael Douglas being setup to look like her murderer to...............the wife blowing her away to pieces and living happily ever after with Mike.
