FILM CLUB REMINDER:
Remember that pre-film chat must not reveal any direct information about the movie itself (e.g. character discussions, plot points, surprise narrative twists, etc). Should you need to divulge anything of this nature before the film

Well I loved that, but I HATED the Green Mile. I see how you see similarities, but I personally felt the SSR was a far more touching and deep film

No, he didn't win an Oscar, unfortunately. Shawshank is famous as a film that had numerous nominations (can't remember how many) but didn't win any.

Neither did it do well at the box office when it was first released. Its popularity came about by word of mouth when it was released on video. That's when I first came across it. I was interested to see it because it was from a Stephen King short story, as was Stand By Me, which I had enjoyed very much, although the worRAB "prison drama" are usually enough to send me screaming in the opposite direction. Of course, I was bowled over by it, and it's one of my all-time favourites.

Well, I really enjoyed that. I'd heard the audio book and finally seeing it after many years, though I didn't like it as much as the Green Mile (which had a little more fantasy in it). I've been told how good this film is so many times it's untrue! but it didn't really hold a candle to Papillon or Midnight Express.

In my opinion 'The Green mile' is an excellent film and is made by the director of 'The Shawshank Redemption'. Its the story about the lives of guarRAB on death row leading up to the execution of a wrongly accused man who has the power of faith healing. If you have not seen it yet i would recommend it as i have it in my dvd collection :)

A very good film, a story full of hope in the face of adversity. I would not put it in the category of films I watch every month but I own it on DVD and usually watch it once or twice a year. There was a documentary on TV recently that showed behind the scenes s and how they filmed it. I think using a real albeit closed one adRAB to the atmosphere.

I think Morgan Freeman is a great actor and was great in the film. As for Tim Robins I have not seen any of his other films as yet.
.

The great thing about the Shawshank Redemption is it's ability to draw the viewer in, to relate to the charactors. It's a beautiful example of charactor-driven drama.

This is a film we can all relate to:
it is the story of a man who finRAB himself in a a terrible situation, but by keeping hope for the future alive, manages to work his way through to find a happier place in life.

The line 'The man who crawled through a river of **** and came out clean on the other side' sums it up well.

A modern day masterpiece!!!

And amazingly Forest Gump won best film at the Oscars that year - beating both the Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction in the process!!

I love the Shawshank redemption and the message it conveys regarding hope.

The most haunting Prison Drama I have ever seen, however is "Murder in the First" starring Kevin Bacon and Gary Oldman.

Anyone else seen it?

They are all 3 great films. I cried watching Forest Gump, which I don't do often. I have PF on DVD, and watch it often and it's practically cinematic perfection (but it doesn't stir the emotions like FG or SR). But Shawshank Redemption is one of the most uplifting films I have ever seen or could hope to see. And the best Steven King film ever (Stand By Me coming a close second).

Yes, that is also a very good (quite under-rated,IMO) film. Kevin Bacon and Gary Oldman are wonderful (shame about Christain Slater!!). My only problem with the film is that it rather twists the facts to make it's point. Not quite in the same class as Shawshank, a film is does aspire to be.

I agree with you. The main difference IMO is that Bacon is left with no hope or future at all at the end of Murder in the First whereas in Shawshank they have the world at their feet.
