Film Club - Week 2 - THURSDAY (1998)

Just watched it. Definitely deserved it's 18 certificate :D

Overall I really enjoyed it, although for some reason I feel it should have been just a little bit longer. Not really much of a plot to it, just him being visited by lots of people from his past but I was gripped from the opening scene which was very good imo. I was eating my cheerios while watching the woman get her brains blasted out  :D . I didn't realise it was supposed to be funny until half way through but I laughed out loud in a few places so not too bad there. Oh and I thought the casting was good.

I'll be leaving my phone unplugged for next week's film. I was called 5 times by people trying to sell me stuff, 1 of whom was talking to me for 3 minutes, evidently unable to understand I already had a conservatory. I should have hung up but I'm too polite. :)

Anyway I digress. What did everyone else think?

Well, as you probably know by now, I love this movie. It was critically slammed upon its release as a poorly made "Tarantino movie", although clearly, whilst there are stylistic similarities, it isn't meant to be anything like a "Tarantino movie"!

I think that the cast are excellent; all are daft, gangsta losers, but Thomas Jane's Casey is just that little bit smarter than the rest. My favourite line? I know it's clich

sorry guys but I just couldn't get into this movie. I think Tarantino(+esque) dates really really quickly and this to me suffered from the same problem. Just didn't seem particularly original in the witty. I really wanted to like it but got the feeling I'd seen it all before.
Sorry to be so negative. Shame more people did not see it so that we could have had a longer discussion.

Not too worry on either accounts. Firstly, it was unlikely that many people were going to watch an independent movie in a late night/early morning slot - but that's part of the fun, some will tune into one film and others will tune into another.

Secondly, it's good that you didn't like the film. The idea is that we discuss the films, good or bad. Who'd want to join a 'film that everyone loves of the week' thread anyway :D

I understand what you're saying about the film not aging well with time; mind you, I think that many films considered classics have suffered over the years - The Exorcist being a particularly good example!
I also think that the film was caught up in the bandwagon of 'hyper-violence' tarantino era and perhaps would have been slightly 'fresher' had the world not already seen 'Pulp Fiction', etc...
