Film Club - Week 1 - Blow (2001)

I can't make a solid decision on this movie - the first half (Pre-Cruz) was well acted, had a strong script and then...I just felt like it all fell down. He became obsessed with her despite being so in love with Barbra earlier in the movie. Still, I can't fault Depp on his acting - he does he best even when the plot goes pear shaped. But that isn't anyone fault, it's a biography and therefore that must be how the real George Jung played his life out.
The film flows really well over the vast time span with the adjustment of 60s/70s/80s fashion and Depp being made to look older and heavier as the movie progressed. Mexico barely changed, but I think that's an accurate portrayal. The direction was quite slick, but I enjoy that style. Must get around to seeing Goodfellas one day.
Overall though, I felt for George - he wasn't a bad guy. He was almost clean when they picked him up, just trying to make a better life for his kid than he'd had as a child. But maybe that's my sentimental side going overboard.

I don't rate movies out of five/ten so I hope that isn't required - it overlooks too many important parts of the film. So there
