Filling up my Harley Davidson?

I was riding today and started to run out of gas, its a new bike to me so im not quite sure on the mileage yet, so i started getting low i guess.

i ride a 91 flstc and the tank has a gas hole on each side

my question is, do i need to fill both sides up? or just use one and the both holes are there for my convenience?

just the right one,as it's higher than the left one when on the side stand,there is an equalisation tube underneath the tanks.
btw,the left hand cap unscrews backwards.
 
Fill both sides. They are connected by a small hose, so if you only fill up one side, you only have half a tank.
