Filler

We all know what anime filler is, it's when they make up stories to kill time so they don't surpass the manga, it usualy isn't good and it usualy goes off track and features nothing in the way of serious action or anything that helps the plot out. But thats with anime. What would you consider "filler" for western animated cartoons? I figured I would ask the question here since most of the people I enjoy hearing from post within this forum, but I would love to hear your take on this.

PS: If a mod wishes to move this into the general forum I would understand.

"Filler" episodes don't exist solely in anime; they crop in any show that follows a serial fashion. Filler eps are just one-shot stories which aren't tied directly into the main story arc. Heck, even Avatar had some filler episodes.

Comedy shows which don't tell one giant story in an episodic fashion don't usually have filler episodes, for reasons which should be self-explanatory.

Great assesment, thats what I wanted to hear, and I agree. Take Ben 10:AF, remember the episode some weeks back where he revealed his powers to his family? Thats my definition of "Filler" in cartoons. Or the episode from season one "Gwen 10", more filler. But Western toon's don't seem to suffer from it as bad as eastern cartoons. Another "filler" term could be construde as a sucky episode thrown in just to keep a block "fresh" with new content.

Eh, I wouldn't call that filler, even if most of the fandom does. Some shows, like Yu-Gi-Oh and Mega Man Star Force, incorporated plenty of stuff that wasn't in the source material into the main plotline of the show. Likewise, there can be filler in the source materiel. A more accurate description of that stuff is simply "stuff that wasn't in the source material", since it's not always used as filler which pretty much means what it sounds like: stuff not having to do with the story and only exists to pad out the series.
