Fever and drenching sweats after surgery

Good that the white count wasn't high but I would think they would want to watch that oxygen level. Boy being dehydrated can really make you feel bad also so I hope that is better. You might be right about it being the medication since you are taking a lot. What are you taking for the pain? But you are also right about it might be the pain because pain can do some weird things.

I was originally on Percocet when I came home from the hospital and it sure made me sweat. I am on Lortab 10 now and I still have some episodes of sweating but not as bad as before.

I had surgery on july 2. I was in the hospital a whole week, and was still sick when discharged. they had me on IV antibiotic while I was in there. they said the fever peaked at 9 every nite. my fever ranges from 99 to 102.

I wake up drenched every time i fall asleep. Anyone else have this? Surgeon said its not an infection from the inscision. I called my primary care dr and he said it sounRAB like an infection from the surgery.

Here I go getting passed from dr to dr again. what do I do?
 
Roro, the fever and the drenching sweats may be completely unrelated. I am 17 days post op for L4-S1 fusion, and although I am not running a fever nor do I have an infection I always wake from sleep absolutely drenched in sweat. My doctor and his nurses have assured me this is fairly common and they believe it's from the pain killers (I'm taking Vicodin.)

I had a L4/L5 Fusion on April 29th, and they had to go back into the operating room a few days later because one of the screws were not positioned properly and I could not move my right leg. While I was in the hosp. I was on Morophine, Percecet, and Oxicotten (may not be proper spelling). I was having the most terrible sweats and chills you could imagine!! I thought I was going to go crazy. I asked the dr. what was happening, and I was told it could be the meRAB. Therefore, when I left the hosp. I did not fill my Percecet prescription. I took plain extra strength Tylenol. Well as you can imagine as the days went on and the meRAB from the hosp. left my body the pain was terrible. However, the sweats and chills stayed. I went to my family dr. and he said I could have an infection. He gave me some antibiotics. While I was on the antibiotics the daytime sweats were manageable, but still tough time with the night. However, once the antibotics were done, BAM! I was hit again with terrible, terrible 24hr sweats and chills. They lasted about 5 weeks post-surgery and then went away. All I can say, IMHO is that it may be your body's reaction to the hardware in your body or the amount anesthesia in the body. I honesty don't know, but I do know that neither my family dr. or my surgeon could not give me a definite answer. So in my experience the sweats and chills went away on their on. However I did not have a fever. I hope this has been some help to you! Take care, and I hope you are feeling better very soon.
 
i am definitely better, fever is down to 99-100.5 and sweats are less drenching, mostly upper body.

maybe it will just go away. i go tues to get stitches out
 
Has anyone had you take a blood test so they can see if your white count is high? If it is then there is an infection. I will agree that a lot of the medication can cause sweats. Did either of the doctors say they wanted a blood test? I think I would go to my family doctor and talk to him. I had a fever and sweats following one of my neck surgeries and I went to my family doctor. It ended up that I had pneumonia but I didn't have the cough so I would have never thought about that. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

If they are sure you do not have an infection, you could possibly be having an adverse reaction to one of the medications you are taking, which is not one that would be considered tolerable in my book. Some side effects of meRAB are livable if minor, but that type of reaction is a serious attention one and should be investigated and the med stopped.

Sweats are very common post-op with the medications taken. They will subside over time.

But I would be concerned about the fever, especially if you are not accustomed to having a fever to begin with.

I am a subnormal person, and if I get a fever (which is next to never) I can easily become dellirious at what people consider a low level temperature. So be careful on this.

Fevers are an indication that something is not right. Hang in there and keep us posted.
 
my white count was NOT high, so good sign. My abnormal tests were low hematocrit of 23, low oxygen stats in the 80's. I was also dehydrated.

I need to probably go to a pulmonologist, because I think the low O2 was pre-existing.

I am on 3 times the amount of pain meRAB, so maybe it is the meRAB. Could also be the pain itself.
