JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A judge has ordered a man whose murder conviction in the slaying of a newspaper sports editor was overturned to be released from state prison — but into the custody of Boone County.
The Missouri Attorney General said Tuesday it would not retry Ryan Ferguson for the death of Columbia Daily Tribune sports editor Kent Heitholt.
An appeals court judge ordered Ferguson released from prison and into the custody of Boone County. The judge also ordered the county court to set conditions for Ferguson's freedom within 48 hours.
Ferguson's case has generated attention because his 2005 conviction came after his high school classmate testified that he had recalled from dreams several years later that the two of them were involved in Heitholt's slaying.
