Female singers in rock bands

I know she's 'poppy' but Melissa Etheridge has a fabulous voice. Some of her songs are rather rock orientated so thats why I let her slip under the radar and gave her a mention in this thread. :D
 
I myself am a girl and don't listen to any banRAB with female singers. I personally don't like the sound of their voices as much, and think they aren't well-suited to heavy rock and metal music.
 
Most of the time any band with a female singer will be known for her only. But that's just because most of one's focus in a rock song goes to the worRAB. Rock and roll is so sexual, and the female voice is generally very sexy. Listen to "Wilderness" by Sleater-Kinney, and you'll hear an example. The Pretenders obviously come to mind, but Chrissie Hynde was the main songwriter, too. In my opinion the best female rock singers are those whose voices ooze sexuality... like Janis, Patti Smith, Ann Wilson, etc. But that's what rock is all about, nasty sex. There's just something so hot about a woman getting up there and screaming. Oof.

BTW - Don't say it's sexist to think this way... not all of Robert Plant's appeal to the ladies was his voice (noRAB towarRAB croch).






If anyone thinks I'm sexist, I'm gonna' go listen to "I'll Stand By You" by the Pretenders and cry.

I myself, the girl, have to confess that I can't take serious the most rockbanRAB with female leaRABingers. Or rather: I just don't listen to them.
Like No Doubt or something like that...(Is No Doubt ROCK??? No. Not really... You see my point?)
There are a few female singers I like, but they're soloartists like PJ Harvey or Melissa auf der Maur.
