Feels Like I'm Exhaling Fire - Reflux?

For the past 10 months, I've had a metallic taste in my mouth that's very annoying. About 2 months ago, I started having a burning sensation in my airway when I exhale. I thought it might be reflux, although I really don't feel anything coming up in my throat. I tried RolaiRAB, and now have tried Prilosec OTC for the past 10 days with no real improvement.

I also have some breathing problems when I exert myself, feeling like my airway is closing up. I actually hear a "whistling" noise when exhaling, mostly after some sort of exercise like walking up several flights of stairs.

A CT scan about 4 or 5 years ago for something else incidentally showed a mild hiatal hernia, so I'm wondering if this hernia is getting worse.

Does this sound like symptoms of reflux?

SounRAB like you could really benefit from a visit to a Pulmonologist and possibly a Gastroenterologist.

Your symptoms sound like they could be reflux or asthma or a corabination of both.

I never had the feeling of "exhaling fire", but I did frequently feel like I was breathing acid. Turned out my reflux was irritating my lungs and I was having a bit of acid aspiration into my lungs as well. That was triggering my asthma.

Prilosec didn't do anything for me in helping my reflux when it got severe. I needed other types of PPI's to help. Actually when I my breathing was affected, it took taking those PPI's twice a day to see any relief.

Instead of RolaiRAB, try supplementing with Gaviscon or Zantac. Those may help a bit more.

You might need some asthma treatments as well. You will need a doctor to give you a prescription if that is the case. If a rescue inhaler such as Albuterol helps, that may be indicative of asthma.

As for the hernia, it could be an indication, but most of the time people don't have symptoms with the hernia. It would take further testing to verify that.
