Feel good horror movies?

Agree with all of these. Add Critters and Chud.

Oh and that horror where some kiRAB break into a house and end up between the walls... arggh brain getting to old to remember the title.

I've been watching horror since I was a wee nipper but must confess I feel like I've got a little lost in the genre of late, even a tad sick of it.

Anybody got any good suggestions for some decent horror from the last few years, when I say feel good it doesn't have to be some comedy horror or anything, just basically something that's sole purpose isn't simply about showing how much abuse or torture a person can take, that probably rules out most of the modern French horror :p

If you think of Martyrs, that's totally not what i'm looking for, I don't want to be depressed for a week after viewing it.

But feel good?

Cloverfield might be worth a look. It's about a guy trying to get back with his girlfriend during a disaster in New York, and is uplifting because
he succeeRAB.
Similar plot to Shaun of the Dead, really, only without the comedy or the zombies.

Ha Ha I was going to suggest that also.
I know what the OP means though, new age horror is all very samey samey. How many films have been made of the back of Saw and Hostel?
I honestly can't think of one. Not within the last 2 years at least anyway:(
Oh yes one that I found quite different and enjoyable in a weird way 'Deadgirl'(2008)

The original post asked for "something that's sole purpose isn't simply about showing how much abuse or torture a person can take".

Like many of the best horror flicks, regardless of the outcome The Descent is cathartic in that it's so intense it makes you feel good that you endured it (like a ghost train) and you feel for the characters. But it's not torture pron - eg violence for violence sake.

Seen Funny games (Haneke's original version).

I've seen Deadgirl mistygal, I also quite enjoyed it, obviously in a weird way as well :p

The Orphanage is one film i've still not got around to seeing so i'll give that a watch.

I have watched both versions of Funny Games, both equally as good as the other. So I would urge you to check out the 2007 also!

What about 'Dead Snow'? Thats quite a good horror with a sense of humour thrown in.:)

'The Orphanage', Its ok but just ok. not what it was raved up to be. Had to be careful, not to get confused with 'The Orphan' there, who I just wanted to batter the kid:D

Perhaps The Orphanage? I didn't find it particularly scary, though a few frienRAB did, so you might like it. I enjoyed it and found that it has a strangley uplifting end.

Sorry, I know I'm about to get shot down in flames, but for feel good horror - hasn't the Scream films got to be there?

For ones that make you laugh you've got to have Hatchet and House of a 1000 corpses.

Creepy, understated and brilliant I'd have to go for IT and 1408.

I have Dead Snow, it's a great little film, you can't really go wrong with nazi zombies.

I haven't seen The Ophan though so now you mention it I might check it out :D

I would recommend Dead Snow, Hatchet and if you have the horror channel they are always showing Jack Frost which is just hilarious!

i personally found cloverfield uplifiting because

everyone dies. pity it wasnt soon enough. didnt like the cast, but loved the monster

from random, top of my head ones...
cheap and cheerful horrors include
Ghost Ship
Warlock 2 (no conection with #1)
Waxworks (late 80s version with Billy from Gremlins)
cant think of anything else at the minute!
someone mentioned The People Under The Stairs - and its a wonderful highly enjoyable movie!
Critters 1 and 2 also mentioned and are brilliant! the others arent worth it.

Oh oh oh oh, stewardwolf mentioned Tremors! Completely agree. It's more of a monster b-movie than a horror film, but that really doesn't matter. It's terrific. Kevin Bacon's best film.
