SACRAMENTO (KTLA) — The FBI confirmed Tuesday agents were executing a search warrant at the State Capitol looking for “evidence in an ongoing investigation.”
The search warrant remained under seal, but the U.S. Attorney’s office in Sacramento confirmed agents were searching the office of Sen. Ron Calderon, D-Montebello, L.A. Times reporter Paige St. John said.
According to the FBI, the search is “not a public safety threat.”
Sources with knowledge of the probe said the search of Calderon’s office is part of a wider public corruption investigation in Los Angeles County, the LA Times said.
Laura Eimiller, an FBI spokeswoman in Los Angeles, said the search involved two locations, both related to the same investigation.
Senate Sgt. at Arms Tony Beard said FBI agents had search warrants for Calderon’s office and the Latino Legislative Caucus office.
The Senate has and will continue to fully cooperate with the agents in this matter, Beard said in a statement.
Calderon was elected in 2006 to the 30th Senate District, which includes: Bell, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Cudahy, Huntington Park, La Mirada, Los Angeles, Montebello, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, South El Monte, South Gate, Whittier, East La Mirada, East Los Angeles, Florence-Graham, Hacienda Heights, South Whittier, and West Whittier.
