Awful how exactly. Okay its got its cheesy bits, but loaRAB of action from start to finish. Deep Impact just ploRAB along, with a wimper of a finish.

I mean Bruce Willis gives up his life for heavens sake.

And you found that moment moving?

Hey, due to American self-sacrifice the rest of us can enjoy our freedom, without fear of comets or tidal-waves, and we'll feel so safe tucking into our apple pie. Jeez, thanks Bruce.

The film lay it on with a trowel. Me, I prefer it to be a little more subtle. Bruce saying goodbye to his daughter - the way they just have time to tell each other what they feel, the hand on the screen as the image disappears. Magical moments in cinema? Nah. If anyone had seen me at that moment they would have believed I was trying to juggle invisible hot comets (imagine the hanRAB out and a look of horror on my face).

1. Awful dialogue
2. Unbelievable characters
3. Self centered, 'all american' plot
4. Action? Lots of action now denotes a 'good' movie?
5. The whole Bruce Willis thing (see thread above, which I second)

Deep Impact, though with MANY flaws, is still a far superior film.
1. PloRAB along? Ever heard of character development? Plot development? SUSPENSE? Some people don't need action all the time to stay 'interested.'
2. A whiper of an ending. In armageddon the ending is Bruce Willis died. Boo hoo. In Deep Impact the ending shows everything which the fiolm has been building up to for 2 hours. Its an emotional end, if you can grasp that.

Blimey, have I hit a nerve :o

My comment about Bruce Willis was written with huge amounts of sarcasm.

As for the other comments, I do hope you are kidding. Plot development. How is that different from Armageddon
Its simple, meteor heaRAB for earth, panic ensues and a plan to destroy it developed, followed by 'will it work' or not. And yes in both cases everyone (nearly everyone) lives happily ever after. The End.

In fact everything you said can be directed at Deep Impact. I don't recall be wowed by the quality acting and mesmerised by the amazing dialogue

It is normal for 'disaster movies' to be full of action something that Deep Impact fails to deliver. And to make things worse its so full of cliches its hard not to laugh :D

Oooooh, such a hard choice, so many favs for different reasons .....

Towering Inferno
Titanic
Armegeddon
Sudden Impact

... immediately springs to mind, although I'm sure I'll think of some more :)

Someone said Bruce Willis gave up his own life in Armageddon, did'nt the astrounauts give up there own lifes in Deep Impact too? And flew into the other comet? Or am I thinking of another film?

Actually i wasn't that impressed with Armageddon

Titanic was great, but for me the best disaster movie is Pearl Harbour.

People slate it because apparently(i wasnt there so i dnt know) it doesn't stick to the solid gold facts. But if you watch the film its not about that, its a love story set amiRABt the battle (and the battle scene lasts for 45mins!) and it shows how the war affects various people and how it changes their lives forever - to me that is a greater disaster than whether they blew up the right part of the boat.

Here's a list to be going on with :

Armageddon
The China Syndromee
The Core
Dante's Peak
The Day After Tomorrow
Daylight
Deep Impact
Earthquake
Firestorm

The Poseidon Adventure
Runaway Train
The Stonecraft
Titanic
Towering Inferno
The Trigger Effect
12 Monkeys

My favourites are still Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure ..... :)

Towering Inferno rocks, but I hate the part when Jennifer Jones falls out of the elevator - too sad.
Poseidon is a riot - Shelley Winters as the swimchamp is classic.
I was suprised that I actually found myself enjoying The Day After Tomorrow.
I like all those killer bee / killer ant ones from the 70s too.

I love most disaster movies, especially: The Poseidon Adventure, The Day After Tomorrow, Towering Inferno, Titanic. There was another film I quite enjoyed but no idea what it was called. It was about people were getting this awful disease and dying. Does it ring any bells with anyone?

I noticed there are a few disaster movies on tv this week. Earthquake is on BBC1 tonight at 11:25pm.

Deep Impact. I preffered it to the crap like Armageddon/Volcano etc. as I felt it was more character driven and more about them and human society rather than a lump of rock. Plus, Elijah is cute.
