Favourite Commentary Track

I love commentary tracks on DVRAB and in some cases I've enjoyed it far more than the film. My favourites so far are:

Kevin Smith & Co - Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy
Peter Bogdanovich - Bringing up Baby
Sam Raimi & Bruce Campbell - Evil Dead 2
Paul Verhoeven - Robocop (Criterion ed)
Cast in character - Spinal Tap
Brad Pitt & Edward Norton - Fight Club
Both tracks on - Oceans 11

Anybody got recommendations?

1) Any commentary track that has Director John Carpenter & Actor Kurt Russel together ("The Thing", "Big Trouble in Little China", "Escape from NY") is a must! The two of them are hilarious when they get together. And you hear some great behind-the-scenes stories too! :)

2) Dawn of the Dead: Ultimate Edition - this DVD set comes with 3 versions of the classic Romero movie. All of them have commentaries but the best "DotD" commentary track can be found on the European cut of the film. It's just the 4 major castmembers enjoying themselves as they watch the movie along with us. :)

3) Bubba-Hotep - Bruce Campbell does a commentary track .... as Elvis Presley. :D

The new DVD "Big Nothing" has a funny commentary with Simon Pegg, Alice Eve and the director, arguing and slowing getting drunk on wine.

The commentary on Dodgeball is brilliant. Ben Stiller basically comes in late, p*ssies everone off so they all storm out halfway through, and so the sound guys put on the Something about Mary commentary instead (the real thing). Hilarious. (the "real" commentary is also on the disc as an easter egg.)

Love Actually - dreadful film but funny commentary with Hugh Grant criticising Colin Firth every time he appears on screen and Richard Curtis realising that the kid in the film (who is commentating with them) isn't actually old enough to watch the movie part way through.

I haven't listened to many commentary tracks - keep meaning to get around to it - but one I did listen to part of the way through is Paul Verhoven and the writer on Starship Troopers. It's really funny - they hardly agree on anything! Verhoven says something about the symbolism and imagery and the writer says something like "well, no Paul, actually I meant such-and-such..."

It's surprising how often a bad film has a good commentary and vice-versa.

Anyway, I think 'Cabin Fever' deserves a mention. About 4 or 5 commentary tracks from memory and, although there is some repetition, I can listen to and enjoy them all back-to-back.

Rarely listen to commentaries as they bore me to tears, but one I do like is This Is Spinal Tap as it's done in character and adRAB to the film.

if you have even a passing interest in hong kong martial art movies then i suggest you check out one of the Hong Kong legenRAB dvd's with commentary by Bey Logan. He is a expert in the genre and has worked on many films and he brings a really interesting insight into a very different film industry to hollywood.

i would also vouch for comentaries on all the Kevin smith films, anything involving Simon Pegg, the John Carpenter movies, the Goonies, Evil Dead and Dawn of the Dead

Not strictly a film, but the episode commentaries on the two series of Spaced with Pegg, Frost etc.. are brilliant.

The commentary on Ghostbusters is very good too. You can see the participants in silhouette and they are all comedy genii.
