My favourites and why...

Absolute favourite : Inherit the Wind - Spencer Tracy at his finest.
Some Like it Hot : Best comedy film ever made (Don't you dare re-make it).
The 39 Steps : Hitchcock version with Robert Donat. Timeless thriller.
Sabateur (Not Sabotage) : Hitchcock. Fast-paced thriller and love story.
Witness for the Prosecution : Charles Laughton and Marlene Dietrich. Best coutroom drama.
Sherlock Holmes : Any of the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce films. Bliss.
Double Indemnity. Defines the term Film Noir.
Strangers on a Train. Re-defines the term Film Noir.
Stage Fright : Alastair Sim and Marlene Dietrich, Hitchcock again.
The Naked Truth : Terry Thomas, Peter Sellers, Dennis Price and Peggy Mount.
The Green Man : Alastair Sim. George Cole.
School for Scoundrels : Alastair Sim. Terry Thomas.
Laughter in Paradise. Terry Thomas. George Cole.

No definitely not allowed; this is a colour film with B&W bits. :) . Quite different to my Ivan the Terrible which is a B&W film with colour bits. :D

...magnificent. :)
 
Only if I can second it. This is a brilliant, brilliant movie, which some critics still persist in underrating.

Other b&w favourites for me: His Girl Friday; The Philadelphia Story, Notorious; Sunset Boulevard; and on a more frivolous note, Carry On Cabby (which had a slightly harder edge than the rest of the series).
 
Small correction: it was Guy Middleton who played the smooth-talking bachelor in 'Laughter in Paradise', not Terry-Thomas. He wasn't in that one.

All brilliant films, though, and as a Sellers nut, I would add Two Way Stretch and Wrong Arm Of The Law. There's something about the way Lionel Jeffries and Sellers performed together -- such an underrated comedy double-act

Cannot mention it here because it is colour; ow to hell with it; Tarkovsky's Solaris is a depressing little jewel and better than the well intentioned re-make with Clooney. Should probably be in the harshest ending thread actually.
