In most comedy series, references to aspects of other Anime or Manga have become a usually hilarious way to both appease fans, keep the living memory of older series alive, and just have a good laugh. Hell its become so popular that "Reference Comedy" has become its own sub-genre, with series like Hayate no Gotoku, Seitokai no Ichizon and........ Lucky Star...
Whats more, references to other anime is a great joke style that almost never appears in mainstream series like Naruto and Bleach and One piece and blah blah blah. Why? I dunno! Maybe they're too stuck up themselves to do it. Or actually its probably just because none of them are comedies to begin with.... but either way, narutards and stuff wont get what im talking about. Fantastic.
I love reference jokes, for me they really make the episode.
Some funny ones recently have been of Mahoromatic. In both the KissxSis and Ookami-san to shichinin no Nakamatachi series there has been a character voiced by Ayako Kawasumi (seiyu for Mahoro) and she has repeated her classic catch phrase "I think sexual things are bad!". Oh man I lol so hard every time i hear that. She must be getting really pissed off that they keep making her say that....
Another favorite reference joke of mine is Nabeshin. Not only was the character one of the producers from the series of Excel Saga, but he himself was actually dressed in the direct costume of Lupan III. Its hilarious to see him pop up with his stupid afro and whiney monotone voice, and when he was in Hayate no Gotoku I laughed, but even more when he was driving the Bus in Nyankoi. hes everywhere haha.
Now this isn't actually my fav reference, infact i kinda dislike it coz she doesnt do the voice right but any reference to Dokuro-chan deserves attention.... imo
Hahah, I thought that was absolutely AMAZING at the time, but then I found out that Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu was made by Shaa, who yeah, is the same guy who made Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan. Hahah, referencing his own work, what a douche. mind you the kissxsis guy did it with Mahoromatic. (Some other series that have featured Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan references include Hayate no Gotoku, Moetan and Kemeko Deluxe. Why yes, i have been counting.)
ANYWAY, cross-anime references are awesome, and i love recalling them with friends and laughing at the blatant fan service. Whats more, understanding reference jokes means that you have to had watched it in the first place, so the people who appreciate reference based humor are usually pretty knowledgeable/experienced anime fans themselves. That, or just people who watched lucky star because they thought it was cute.
So yeah, share your favorite anime references! What was it? An old theme song playing in the back ground? A classic catch phrase suddenly popping up? The characters ragging on the voice actors past roles? An old character mysteriously running past in the background? Do tell!
