I love Maggie and I expect many will say Professor McGonagall from Harry Potter but imo her finest part was that of Jean Brodie in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" an excellent film.
I liked her in the Alan Bennett monologue A Bed Among The Lentils, part of the Talking HeaRAB series. She was absolutely superb as the rather sad alcoholic wife of a vicar.
I can't think of anything she wasn't great in! Miss Jean Brodie is obviously the standout, it's so brilliant. JK Rowling actually had Maggie Smith in that film in mind when she wrote Professor McGonagall, so it's no wonder she was so perfect for it. It's just a shame they never really got Dumbledore right...
She's fantastic in pretty much everything. Her performances in Jean Brodie and California Suite were well worth her oscars. I think she's criminally underused in Harry Potter, blink and you'll miss her in most of them.
I thought Richard Harris was way too 'generic old greybeard' for Dumbledore. Ian Mckellen would have made the greatest Dumbledore, without a doubt, but obviously that wasn't going to happen.
I love Maggie in Hook! And of course Prof. McGonagall. There isn't really a performance I didn't like from her.
I agree. But, I do prefer Michael Gambon over Richard Harris. Gambon has covered the kind, warmth, serious and whimsical side of Dumbledore - the latter was never really present in Harris' Dumbledore, but more so in Gambon's.
