Fasting blood test(s) question

Yesterday morning I had a cup of coffee with cream and sugar and a short while later, a glass of skim milk. A few hours later I left for the doctor's office where I was given paperwork to go have bloodwork. At the blood clinic I had blood drawn for the following tests...

* CBC w/Diff
* Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)
* Hepatic Function Panel
* Thyroid Panel (All tests)
* Hepatitis A, B and C
* Lipid Panel

Of course, several of the above tests consist of multiple individual tests in and of themselves and I realize that having had a cup of coffee that morning will probably throw any glucose/lipid tests off a bit but as far as the other tests are concerned, (1) just how affected will they be by the coffee with cream and sugar I had hours earlier that morning and (2) exactly which tests - if any - will be affected?. Should I have these tests done all over again?.

Thanks so much for any input on this, Steve

It is a little late now, however, it would have been better to fast before tests.

I always make doctor appointments early in the morning so I do not have to go so long without food.

If I have had food before seeing the doctor, I go the next day for lab, fasting.

You may have some false readings.

Thanks for the reply!. Just wondering...false reading on which specific tests?. Glucose-related ones?. Lipid-related ones?. Some of them?. All of them?.

Just on glucose and lipid/cholesterol ones. And it probably won't make that much of a difference unless you already have high cholesterol and sugar issues. I forgot last year that I had an appointment for blood work and had 2 cups of tea with raw sugar and 1/4 bagel with cream cheese. My total Cholesterol was 167 (obviously not impacted by the cream cheese!) and my blood sugar was 56 (also obviously not adversely impactd by 2 spoons of raw sugar - would that it had been!)

If those values seem out of whack when you get the results, you can always have a second test done.

Hello there- Usually, the lab or doctor writing the orders for any kind of bloodwork will let you know ahead of time if your tests are fasting blood tests. If they are, then they usually ask that you not eat or drink anything after midnight, or however long before the test they feel is appropriate.

Also, when you go in to actually have fasting bloodwork drawn, they normally ask if you've had anything to eat or drink prior to even drawing blood.

You may have to have some of the tests done again, but if they didn't tell you prior that it is a fasting test, then in my opinion, it's their mistake and they should not bill you nor your insurance for the retest.

Let us know how it turns out, ok?
