Family Guy - "Not All Dogs Go to Heaven" - Talkback [3/29]

Well, I made the right call. Stewie's trip with the TNG guys was a much much better episode than that other anti-Christian bigoted trash they call a show. I should quit watching these as they air and record them for later like I did today.

This gag was originally supposed to appear in "Stewie Kills Lois." Joe told Peter he was calling off the search and declaring Lois dead, and Peter screamed "NOOOOOO"......and it was supposed to pull back from his scream all the way to the entire universe and then to a live-action lamp, then to some celebrities they couldn't afford. They had to cut it for budgetary reasons. Here, they got it through by using the less-expensive Adam West and Rob Lowe.

If you didn't feel like you were preached to, it was because you agreed with the preacher. I don't feel like too many South Park episodes are preachy, but that's because I nod my head to more of them than I do to Family Guy.

From what I could stand of the A-plot....I've never seen such a biased, ignorant and inaccurate portrayal of Christianity before (though I've never seen Saved). Seth has clearly never been to a church in his entire life, or Meg wouldn't be such a blatant old stereotype. Book burnings? What is this, the 1960's?

And to anyone who claims the episode was fair, the burning of "Logic for First-Graders" shoots that dead.

It sounds like Seth (and David Goodman) feel like they're being persecuted for their beliefs (or lack thereof). And the thing is, I can't say I haven't felt like that before either. In fact, I felt like it from this very show tonight. You wanna stop the hate, then stop your own, guys.

You know the people you're talking about are going to read this thread, so the wise thing to do would be to chill out and see what happens instead of making these self-fulfilling prophecies. Lead by example.

Fun fact: The writer for this episode, David A. Goodman, wrote the Futurama episode that featured the original Star Trek cast("Where No Fan Has Gone Before"). Should be interesting to see how this episode stacks up against it.

I'm thinking this idea would be funnier if Meg convinces Brian and then Brian converts back by the end of the show rather than having Meg and Brian argue the entire time and then agreeing to disagree or something.

But, hey, they can surprise me.

That Seth Mc.Farlane commercial was awesome & so CREEPY at the end with an alien(with the Quagmire voice)coming out of his bellybutton, ack, much like the Alec Baldwin commercial.

Martianinvader, I don't think the point of the episode was to make fun of religion itself. Seems more like they were making fun of people who get into religion for all the wrong reasons and then take it too far, which is exactly what Meg was doing. This in turn required Brian to utilize his own beliefs to help out Meg before she passed the point of no return.

At least that's how I see it.

Hmm, Im not too excited about having Brian be in the main story again. He was unbearable last week. But the premise sounds interesting and the Star Trek sub plot will probably be a good time.

Honestly, I think Brian has become the Hank Hill of FG, where everyone else is just nuts and he always has to be in the right. That's the only thing that bugs me about the respective shows as of later seasons....their viewpoints are viewed as wrong at first, but in the end turns out they were right all along.

If this episode's message is to succeed on any serious level, though, it would help if Meg becoming a Christian didn't lead to instant book-burning, and the only way to get her to stop was to hastily convert her to atheism. Until they get away from that, it can't be taken as anything more than a silly show making stupid jokes. Which would be acceptable to me, if they made more jokes.

On that note, American Dad also did an episode about the extremely religious Stan Smith trying to wrap his head around the fact that his friend was an atheist, but it was both much funnier and more meaningful, even though it was coming from the same mindset as this episode. (There was no speech at the end about how God doesn't exist, either.) Some things were said that I didn't agree with, but they were easily forgiven, because the writing was just plain better.

I don't want to go through the trouble of "proving" that this episode was preachy, but that's my take on it, for whatever it's worth.
