Family Guy - "Long John Peter" - Talkback [5/4]

Well he was wrong about one thing,
there wasn't a hook involved.
Okay the last half is pretty bad.

Stewie's homosexuality shines through once again.

There's probably no need to be detailed in my review, so it'll be short and to the point.

They went out on a limb with that "Peter tries to pick up a toad for about a minute" gag and it paid off. I can't explain why. I sort of wanted to hate it because it seemed like the wrong type of long joke, but I laughed anyway. It's all in the execution, I guess. It just rang true somehow, something about the timing and animation.

The rest of it was crap.

Maybe if Peter had CHANGED HIS FACIAL EXPRESSION even once during that interminable "picking up a dead frog" joke, it might have been amusing for about 30 seconds or so. Or maybe if he had been muttering "Oh God, Oh Jeez..." under his breath and getting more and more exasperated as the joke dragged on (and on...and ON...). Instead, he just has his generic "neutral", half-lidded expression throughout the entire scene.

BORING.

Last week Brian stated if you don't like the stupid improbable story twists in a typical FG episode, go on the internet and complain about it. And now Chris mentions that his dad is prone to easily getting distracted by crazy schemes and forgetting about what he was doing previously. These are actually two fairly funny meta refrences back to back actually. Since it describes this one well: The whole point of Peter adopting a parrot was to waste time showcasing he's a parrot and get back to Chris spending time with Anna, the veteranian assitant and his... like what 8th or something potential girlfriend. Well at least they refrence another one later on (the girl Chris was smitten in from the beginning of "To Love And Die In Dixie") so that's something, although I hope for once the continuity DOSEN'T relapse on itself and they actually keep Anna around even though I find that pretty doubtful. Still I like how she seemed like an actual normal girl with decent chemistry for Chris, and was only chased off by Peter's advice of acting like a jerk for her. And even better, for once they remembered who did the bad advice/action that caused the problem (something FG has a habit of forgetting when the action and the aftermath are seperated by a commerical break) and had Peter try and make amend, but totally do the wrong thing due to his stupidity.

As for the humorous moments, I did like Peter bonding with the parrot and decide to become a pirate and rnadomly start looting Mort's stole and shooting cannons at Briitsh travelers. As well as the already mentioned wacky schemes line. Other good moments were "you ever make it with one of the dogs?", Joe trying to have Sex with Bonnie to prove that he can, some of Peter's lame ideas for dates (well at least the already mentioned continuity one and then trying to do one with a sock puppet) and Stewie hitting Brian at the end. Maybe to make up for Brian hitting him in the last episode or something. Not a lot of terrible LOL moments but the plot was more solid then usual so I guess that's something at least.

This was the first full FG episode I've ever seen. I've seen some short online clips of funny scenes and that was the only impression I had of the series, and I probably should have left it that way. This show garnered SM a $100 million contract? Wow.
