Family Guy - "Extra Large Medium" - Talkback [2/14]

As a hardcore fan of South Park, I can already tell the reason for that is because this episode lovingly and lighty borrows story elements from two South Park episodes: Cartman becoming a Psychic Detective for the police, and Stan getting his own Crossing Over With John Edwards show.

Like when Peter wanted to meet "Scrubs" and "Black Scrubs?" :) Family Guy has to be taken a bit more lightly that most fans (especially the fanboys) take it these days.

That's why I was able to enjoy the episode so much, as well as Family Guy in general. Granted there have been better episodes, which is obvious because those are the ones that are going down in Pop Culture history, but Family Guy gives me the pleasure of setting the bar low, JUST for that tiny sliver of 30 minutes.

That musical number was the best the show ever did, based on the lyrics alone. They were clever, fast-paced, and really funny. The number fit into the story arch well, and it even had a little bit of class in it.

The psychic stuff was funny, it just felt like it could have ended as well as it began and progressed. Overall I am generally pleased though.

That musical number was long but hilarious.

Strange that both Cleveland Show and Family Guy had a dominating woman theme. Luckily Chris didn't suffer the same fate.

Great/hilarious episode,

The highlights:
The Starlight Express joke with Peter saying the name alot was funny, hahahaha.
That British guy was hilarious especially how he runs with his bare butt showing, hahahahaha.
Poor Chris/Stewie got lost.
A nice touch with Chris understanding Stewie besides Peter/Meg while having a conversation.
The Stewie defeats Truman joke, hahaha.
Joe talking about Chris/Stewie's corpses, hahahaha.
Carter mentioning Medium, nice.
Mayor Adam West which his line was great.
Yaaay, it's Bruce, & Geoffrey sounds like him, hahahaha.
Those two foreign guys return.
The duck founding father joke, hehehe.
Chris's Down Syndrome date Ellen was kind of creepy.
The Italian guy joke.
Lois getting too carried away with psychics was funny.
Geez, Brian loves being an annoying liberal killjoy as always.
The snail/turtle joke, hehehe.
The Meg/Stewie bathing scene was funny/awkward.
Stewie's big musical number for Chris was awesome/terrific which Stewie is one marvelous singer:anime:!!!!!
Most psychics in real life only want is the money.
Psychic Peter was hilarious especially when he jumps in the family's picnic saying, "PSYCHIC," which made me laugh SO hard, hahahahaha:p:D:p, now I'll be thinking about that scene in my head all day, hahahahaha.
Peter being a psychic reminded me of Eric Cartman/Coach Mc.Guirk being psychics which was funny.
Ellen turning out to be a bossy jerk for poor Chris was funny.
The Star Trek joke was funny, but the animated Lt.Uhura is pretty hot next to Lt.M'Ress.
Go Chris to dump Ellen which poor Chris will find a good decent girlfriend someday & Stewie's last line was so funny.
Joe wanting Psychic Peter is so like the Psychic Detective episode from South Park which is awesome.
Peter telling Joe that he's not psychic was hilarious.

I'm surprised by the lack of discussion in the Family Guy talkback thread, wooow.
Agreeing with zoombie which this episode was so a really nice change of pace with Stewie teaming up with someone else besides Brian which made me happy with joy.
It's strange/interesting with both The Cleveland Show/Family Guy having the mean/bossy/abusive woman dates, yikes, much like the abusive anime women, hehehe.

I wondered if Brian would be just as annoying if I agreed with him for once. Yup, he is. Geez, mellow out, dog. Take some of that weed you love so much.

You know, now Brian having a race problem would actually be funny, as he considers himself so screaming left. It'd be deliciously ironic. And NOW they don't use it.

I love the musical numbers.

It was funny when it focused on Peter. South Park skewered psychics better, in my opinion. Twice.

Either watching the NBA All-Star game or they completely forgot there was a new episode.

I think most people celebrated that yesterday.

Stewie and Chris have been able to understand each other for a while. This is the first time they've had conversations but they have spoken to each other before. Its also been implied that Stewie and Meg can understand each other. And back during the pre-cancellation days there was a few times where it seemed like Peter could understand Stewie. Remember during the Potty Training episode when Stewie tells Peter to put his hand on the toilet and then hits him with the seat? Or what about the season 5 episode where they bond. They didn't have any conversations but they were able to understand each other. At the end of the day, I think Lois is the only one whose clueless about Stewie's speaking abilities.

Wow, this episode seemed particularly disjointed, even for Family Guy. I'm not sure I'm complaining. The musical number was, well, not funny, but really quite impressive nonetheless. Snappy lyrics, excellent animation... just not funny. Again, not sure if I'm complaining.

I think they did a joke, wasn't it last week, where everybody could suddenly understand Stewie? I suppose that could explain why both Chris and Meg could understand him all of a sudden.

If I got nothing else out of the episode, the doggy dominatrix was probably the funniest cutaway I've seen in awhile.

Peter didn't have to say "Starlight Express" too much, but he only said "PSYCHIC" in the style of "ROUNDHOUSE" only once.

Did those 2 cool California guys before the first commercial break look like Canadian comic duo Chip and Pepper Foster (They were the stars of their own 1991-1992 NBC Saturday morning series "Chip and Pepper's Cartoon Madness").

Those were the foreign guys who had lived in the US just long enough to have a grasp on the language, but not quite. It's a callback to an older cutaway, though I forget from which episode.

Wow! This episode blew. How many times has Chris tried to have a girlfriend in this series? Probably as many times as they try to hook Brian up with a girl too.

Horrible episode this week!!

it was good, but not this season's best. They didn't do much with Ellen (I thought they said her name was Emily, but you all and wikipedia say it's Ellen), and I was sort of hoping they'd make fun of her (it took me about a third of the episode in before I realised that the psychic plot was the main plot). That musical number was a bit too long. The "Stewie defeats Truman" gag was very funny. I also like when Adam West wanted to ask one question.

It was sort of like a Simpsons episode, in that the plot didn't get started until close to the first commercial break. It's also interesting how heavily this epsiode shows Chris understanding Stewie (I guess Stewie was right in the last epsiode.. "So everybody can understand me, now?").

BTW, was that Mila Kunis as the voice of Ellen? It's not often she does voices other than Meg.

I think the show is improving in general, but there are still far too many scenes that end with a cutaway gag instead of actually ending the scene and properly transitioning to another one. That contributes to the feeling that the story is disjointed and/or incomplete. There are a lot of half-finished conversations.

I don't know, I enjoyed the episode. I liked the Stewie/Chris bonding and Stewie was extremlly funny in the episode, I LOL'd at a lot of his comments. I didn't really like Brian here, why does he always have to talk out people of what they think is true? First Meg, now this? Its annoying. For once I can see what all the Brian haters are talking about, how sad. Over all, I think I enjoyed the Stewie/Chris plot a lot more than the main plot and yes the song was great.

Ok I rewatched it again it was...an episode I'll say that it. Some scenes were funny, but the plots were bad. Come on Down syndrome? I know they did there best to make light of it but it just came off in bad taste. I also didn't like how they tried to justify being mean to her just because of how she came off. I know they were trying to teach a lesson by saying anyone can be a jerk but they used the wrong teaching aide. And i for one did not like the song it was way too long and came off like a bully trying to be nice to a handicapped person after being scolded by others.

Oh, one other thing -- how much you wanna bet Stewie's line about "robot strength" will actually be "retard strength" in the Adult Swim version? That sounded a little odd to me. I've heard the latter expression used in... well, non-Toon Zone places.
