Family Guy - "Brian's Got A Brand New Bag" - Talkback [11/8]

Well, I think they believe it's funnier now that Cleveland isn't on the show anymore. I had a little chuckle at 'Oh, that's right. Cleveland moved.'

I find it interesting that there have been a few 'Die Hard' references. I was sort of hoping that they'd make a reference to the actor also playing Carl Winslow.

The Peanuts gag was great too. "I also found out that you're not a liscensed therapist!' (KICK!)

I didn't even think about the whole "Brian dating a human" thing while watching it. It's just second nature at this point. Besides, this sort of thing is nothing new. Remember when Bugs Bunny would get hot and bothered by an attractive human lady?

Anyway, I actually thought the first act was kind of weak. The only part I really liked was Peter taking the long way home and interrupting his own "Road House!" when there was another turn in quick succession. That was so silly, and the isometric view of the Quahog streets was pretty cool. Oh, and I liked the video clerk desperately trying to get rid of What Dreams May Come to a resistant Peter.

When they got to Brian dating the 50-year old woman, it got much funnier. I especially liked the dinner at the Griffin's ("How were you feeling when JFK was shot?" "I cried like a baby." "Cried like a 'baby', or cried like you were in college?" :D ). Peter running downstairs to make the first old person joke and getting his joke stolen by Chris was great, too.

And I thought the reason for Brian getting tired of dating an older woman made sense- how fragile she was in bed and having to buy her laxatives and such, and then seeing the carefree young women and being tempted by his old ways. Not that it excused his behavior, of course, but there wasn't some convoluted premise for cheating on her. Though for a second there, I actually thought they'd be taking the show in a new arc with Brian getting married. Guess not.

So this was a holdover from last season due to Patrick Swayze's death? That makes sense to me, because it felt like last season -- which for me is a bad thing. I'm hoping the streak of good episodes continues after this one.

my sentiments exactly. While the topic was a unique one due to the rise in the whole cougar phenomenon, I found it to be a bit stale and insensitive. I think brian actually cheating on her was not cool considering the fact that he was cheated on (either intellectually or physically) with all of the other women he has been with. Some of the jokes were a little over the top too and just didn't make for a good episode of family guy. Often, I found myself turning it back to the E E and E series finale movie and finding a lot more joy than this episode.

You know, I've watched Family Guy for years.

And I really have to say, I'm so sick and tired of Seth MacFarlane's misogyny, or whatever he's hung up on that he's got going. He's got to end this crap with 'Brian gets a girlfriend and then he dumps her/she dumps him'. Either make it work, or don't do the plots.

I don't mind the bathtub gags, I don't mind the Stewie gay jokes (at least they're getting smarter about that), I don't mind half of the crap Peter does.

But seriously, Seth. Watch some of your older stuff, and tell me what went wrong.

Did you get so giddy about getting back from cancellation that you just said 'ah, screw it, I'll just get uncancelled again'? I mean, it's great that you have a job and all, especially in this economy.

But come on. We want quality.

Stop rehashing plots, what's done is done.

Umm, what?

Seriously, all this venom and anger about plots revolving around Brian's love life baffles me. It's a common plot thread. Yesterday's episode wasn't that bad. It was certainly better than "We Love You, Conrad".

It also makes me roll my eyes that whenever anyone dislikes anything about the show, Seth MacFarlane himself is insulted and targeted. Not the writers, not the directors, but just Seth.

I did enjoy the episode, in parts.

And it was better than "We Love You, Conrad."

But seriously.

I blame Seth because it is *his* character. I understand that there are other writers, but I'm pretty sure Seth has the right to say 'No, no, I don't like this' about Brian.

In the old episodes, there was heart. Now Family Guy is just another South Park.

You know, other people are entitled to their opinions of the show. Anytime anyone says something critical about an episode, you lash out and tell them "Stop watching if you don't have anything good to say about it". Just because someone didn't enjoy an episode you otherwise did, that doesn't mean they aren't allowed to voice their negative opinion on it.

If someone isn't happy with the past season, it doesn't mean they always are going to stop watching. I keep watching because I know the FG staff does turn out some pretty good episodes in the midst of some of the poorer ones.

Agreed. Seth voices Brian (and Peter, and Stewie, and Quagmire, etc.) so he obviously has alot of say into what they end up saying. While other writers and directors are at fault too, Seth is the show-runner and the easiest one to target.

Also agreed. Defending the show in discussion/debate is one thing; but saying that people should "stop posting negative opinions about Family Guy if they don't like it" makes no sense whatsoever. This is a talkback, which means you talk about how you feel about the episode. It's not exclusive for people who love the episode; if people watched and disliked it, this is where they should go to post about it. Seriously, stop being under the impression that this is supposed to be a "Family Guy fans only" thread; it's not.

I directed my post toward a person I feel never has anything good to say about the show and is nitpicking at things that were nit-picked to death ages ago. I pick my battles. I'd lose if I countered everyone who didn't like Family Guy. Lots of people don't, and some with good reasons. But the age-old complaints get tiring after a while.

Brian has been dating human women since, what? Season 2? We're in season 8. It's an accepted part of the Family Guy universe. Why complain almost a decade later unless you're looking for something to complain about?

That's not at all a good thing if its your thinly-veiled excuse to bash all shows you feel have declined in quality or were never good to begin with. If anything, you're putting yourself through something just to be negative about it later.

He doesn't lash out at all the negativity. He only objects to those that go through the same routine every week of finding a way to respond in this thread without actually watching the show.

Are we all really so immature that we can't have a Family Guy talkback without the familiar back-and-forth of "it sucks" / "it doesn't"?

Seriously, I never read the FG talkback threads, but I've heard enough about them to know that they are banhammers waiting to happen. Both sides will have their opinions, and neither side will be able to change the others'. Why can't we leave it at that?

And everybody wonders why more and more threads are being locked for negativity...

:rolleyes2:

Thank you, Marvin. For example, Speedy Boris (a member here who I respect immensely) often has very well thought out and intelligent criticisms of Family Guy. I totally respect that and you won't see me countering him harshly, or anyone else who brings legitimate complaints to the table. And I often agree. "Family Gay" had it's moments but was pretty weak while "The Juice Is Loose" (which I actually had the displease of watching last night on Adult Swim) is one of FG's worst. "Peter's Progress" was also a pretty lame way to end season 7. But like I said, I'm going to counter those who obviously hate the show or gave up on it long ago who just post to complain. Why bother?

Complaining about "Brain's Got a Brand New Bag" because Brian dating a human women is weird doesn't make sense to me. It's basically complaining just to complain.
