Family Guy - "Brian Writes a Bestseller" - Talkback [11/21]

This episode felt kinda.... empty.
Kinda just zipped by quickly.

I think it really needed a subplot to make an impression.

This episode put Brian in a really negative light. If you don't dislike him after this episode, I don't know when you will.

You know what I think is funny? A week ago, I said that it seemed like that The Simpsons was losing most of its popularity to Family Guy. Now, tonight, I think it was reversed and the Simpsons ep was the better one.
 
I sometimes like him when he does these things, this episode being one of those times. There are times he does these kinds of things (the only time off-hand I can think of being the episode where Meg tries to get Brian to switch from being an athiest to being a christian).

My favorite scenes included the penguin gags and the live action scene.
 
I feel like a similar gag was used on The Simpsons recently, but can't remember what episode.

Watching this, I kept expecting Stewie to try to get Brian in trouble somehow after Brian started getting mad at him constantly, especially after firing Stewie. I am surprised that Stewie wasn't involved with what happened to him on that talk show.
 
It's been a while since we got a Brian focused episode. This episode seemed like a fitting conclusion to his writing aspirations, even if he did come off as an ass for most of it. Makes sense though since the success went to his head despite realizing the book was a complete farce.

The Bill Maher segment was the highlight of the night, although it went on for quite a long time. I did love how it all built up to Brian ultimately getting humiliated again.
 
Great/funny episode, man, an epic busy Sunday night of new The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, The Venture Brothers season 4 finale, American Dad!, and The Cleveland Show, awesome sauce,

The highlights:
Mayor Adam West's joke, hehehe.
Nice of Stewie helping Brian to write a new novel.
The guy in a coma joke was hilarious, but cool when he mentioned The Predator vs. Batman, hahahahaha.
Stewie has a publishing friend, interesting for a baby to have adult friends.
The penguin publishing joke was hilarious which that penguin is a bigger pervert than Glen Quagmire, hahahahaha:p:D.
Peter's healthy joke was funny.
Stewie being Melanie's loose skin holder along with the Droopy face was hilarious, hahahahaha.
Stewie being Brian's manager is awesome.
Poor Spots Mc.Kenzie.
Stewie being a racist on not wanting Brian to sit next to an Asian guy was funny, hehehe.
Poor Brian so needs a girlfriend.
That Kelly chick was hot.
The second penguin publishing joke was funny, hahahaha, that penguin is awesome.
Renee looking like an anteater was funny.
Poor Stewie created a monster out of Brian which Brian becomes a much bigger jerk than Peter, his character has become unlikable alright next to Cleveland:eek::shrug:.
Stewie randomly stabbed was funny.
Wooooow, Brian was awful for firing poor Stewie.
The live action scene with Brian in Bill Maher's talk show along with Brian's just desserts was great/funny.
Brian got called Snoopy again, hehehe.
Brian's apology was awful which he would've said that he's sorry for being a major jerk for firing him, what an abrupt ending:shrug:.
Sad that Stewie didn't got his revenge on Brian which was weird.

Bill Maher, Dana Gould, and Arianna Huffington guest starring was great tonight.
Wooooow, what a bunch of jerkoffs tonight, there's C. Montgomery Burns, Cleveland/Rallo, Brian, and Stan Smith, but both Mr.Burns, Rallo, and Stan Smith were awesome jerks though, hehehe.
 
If no one's seen it, they should seek out that episode of 'Real Time' where Seth was actually on the panel, which is when I'm guessing this episode's segment was taped. Bill got a great potshot in at Stewie during the 'New Rules' segment with an equally great response from Seth.
 
Considering I have nothing more to add opinion wise that everyone else hasn't shared, I'll just ask this:

I wanna know why exactly "Faster Than the Speed of Love" is so damn terrible. This is the third time the book's been referenced on the show and yet no mention of why it's become such a running gag to mock Brian with. Just that it was panned by literary critics.
 
Memo to Seth: more episodes like this, less episodes like Lois becoming a boxer. In fact more Brian and less Lois in general.

I don't know what everyone's problem is with Brian being a jerk. You obviously weren't supposed to agree or sympathize with him, and you got plenty of payoff for that with the Bill Maher segment. I'd much rather have episodes where Brian does something wrong and pays for it than episodes where Peter does something wrong and is positively reinforced (and is too stupid to appreciate any consequence).
 
Not just Iron Eagle, but one of it's sequels:D. Also I think I remember "Faster Than the Speed of Love" is panned because it's grammatically poor and simplistic and c'mon that title...it's only good for laughing at it.

I think my favorite joke was all the copies being returned and being packaged within shredded pages of the books. I don't like Brian but I do like episodes that highlight and exaggerate his poor qualities into over the top territory that he becomes more entertaining to me like that.
 
okay this is another strange wtf for the episode
see...with the whole writing thing, it's sorta been stock that lois and stewie have been there mostly ragging on brian and his horrible writing (even up to the James Wood pilot episode)
Why is stewie here and why is he so out of character? He just...took it...when has stewie ever just taken anything without any plans of revenge or payback? I mean for goodness sakes he shot Diane Simmons...this just seemed out of character.
On the other hand I don't think this was out of character for Brian...
I dunno another week I didn't like family guy...
this season (save from the premiere) has been subpar
 
I've been a fan of Brian since the beginning but this episode really made me think of him a big jerk. Stewie not getting revenge on Brian was a weird change of pace. Bill Maher slamming Brian's book was funny. Can't wait for Road to the North Pole in 2 weeks. What happened to the subplot that was mentioned on tv.com where Lois decides that her and Peter need separate beds, leading Peter to find a new cuddle buddy? Maybe they decided to save it for another episode.
 
Completely agreed. I hate Brian, but I felt like this was a great episode to show things blow up in his face. Even when we were supposed to feel sorry for him at the beginning, Stewie with his vase and Brian's packings were funny.

This is probably wrong for me to say, but I am relieved that they switched up Brian's racism thing a bit and had him angry about his seating arrangement on the plane. Not that it's good for Brian to be racist, but that has been part of his character for some time. Anyway, I absolutely loved the end with the live action smackdown.

Although I will say my biggest laugh was the penguin. I couldn't stop laughing when he looked at the camera with that huge smile.



Hasn't there already been a Predator vs. Batman?
