Family Guy - "And I'm Joyce Kinney" - Talkback [1/16]

Great episode :anime:
My favorite parts are Lois Vomit scene,Peter making fun of the background characters, and Quagmire's Reaction to the movie XD

Another pariah in Family Guy:

Meg (and briefly Peter) in "I Never Met The Dead Man"
Brian in "Not All Dogs Go To Heaven"
Lois in "And I'm Joyce Kinney"

Also, when you see that a character did a bad thing, you feel like she deserved the retaliation. But when you see what the character paying the price that comes with it, you feel sorry for her (like Bart Simpson in "The Crepes Of Wrath"), or sometimes, didn't deserve it at all (ex. "The Boys Of Bummer").

Saw this episode earlier. Man, Seth Macfarlane sure hates Christians..

I miss Diane. One of my favorite gags on FG was seeing her and Tom constantly bicker with each other. Why did they have to kill her off? They ruined a great comedy bit.

Not quite a laugh-out-loud episode for me, but it was funny and had its moments. The Hulk intro was great. I wish they would do more spoof intros like that. Quagmire's reaction to the film at the end was priceless. That whole finale had me laughing pretty good. Also liked Peter's comments regarding the church crowd: "They're mostly just background people we've never seen before. Half of them don't even move, and the other half just blink." LOL!! And Helen Reddy singing the Channel 5 intro was great. (As well as Tom Tucker's immediate reaction to it afterward. :D )

Yeah, even with all the church scenes, I thought it was surprisingly light on the religion bashing, which I was expecting the episode to be filled with once it got going. In that regard, it was a pretty light episode compared to some others.

My bad. He's credited as being the creator of the show, so I always assume he has something to do with what's on it. I forgot he's got several shows, so he's not always involved with FG.

Anyway, to answer your question, How about going into a Church and covering the cross of Christ with a pornographic movie? (With children in attendance!) The Pastor banning Lois from Church? (No Church does that, they always welcome everyone, no matter what sins they have committed and are there if you want to confess your sins) It's narrow-minded to believe that Pastors will just point their finger at you and say "AWAY HEATHEN!"

Or how about the old 'he's a pastor so obviously he's touched kids' joke that was briefly used during Lois and the Pastor's "made a porn" conversation?

Also, the hymn that they sung basically mocked everyone of the Christian faith, saying it's weird to gather together and sing songs of worship.

I get Lois' speech at the end that everyone is a sinner and it's not right to judge other people, but showing pornography in Church? I think what really offended me, is that you see her literally cover up the cross of Christ so she can show her pornographic movie to everyone. Just a giant middle finger to Christ and the entire Christian faith.

I get that Family Guy is an offensive show. They offend everybody of every race, but Seth has on several occasions said he thinks the world would be a better place if Religion didn't exist. This episode, in my opinon, was complete bigotry towards the Christian faith. But whatever, like I said, the show is here to offend. So I guess, mission accomplished?

This was pretty raunchy for a Family Guy episode. There were some funny gags, but for the most part it doesn't stand out.

One question though, when Lois told the new reporter that she had an abortion, was that a reference to the episode they released on DVD? I didn't see it because I don't want to shell out 12 bucks for a single episode.

Most likely. Considering the only other joke about Peter and Lois having another Griffin kid was when Chris said something about how Meg killed a supposed sister they had, while Peter and Lois were telling him that it was just a dream.

Every example you listed came from actual behavior from churches. Porno movie- showing Passion of the Christ (violence instead of porn). Banning from church- priests have threatened their flock with excommunication if they didn't vote a certain way. And homosexuals certainly aren't accepted in many churches either. Pastor touched kids joke- well, it was just reported that a Vatican edict in 1997 rejected calls to report priests who abused.

This was not bigotry.

Oh please. Passion of The Christ was showing in a realistic fashion what Christ suffered for our sins. Other films about the subject were done in a tame, "family-friendly" style so kids could watch. Passion of the Christ was the first film to show a brutally honest depiction of what he really suffered. There was nothing pornographic about it.

I realize some Pastors have touched kids, but not EVERY Pastor on earth. Nowadays it seems like anytime you see a cartoon or TV show talk about the Church, there's always a "Pastors like to touch little kids" thing thrown in. It's a tired old joke.

It's ridiculous to think there was nothing bigoted about this episode.

Awesome/hilarious episode,

The highlights:
The Incredible Hulk parody opening was super epic which Peter makes a great Hulk next to Homer, hahahahaha.
Interesting that the Griffin family still go to church.
The Drunken Lois joke, poor Stewie, hahahahaha:ack::p:D.
Lois's laughing at the pastor's jokes, hahahaha.
The return of Stewie being evil/murderous which that's a cool evil laser gun.
The Cherry Chevapravatdumrong reference.
The guys' head cut off hanging down was sick/funny.
Editor Mike's funny voice from his smoking habit, hehehe.
The Muppet Show joke was funny, poor Kermit to have a terrible/violent girlfriend like Miss Piggy on changing Bears In Space to Pigs In Space and Seth was great as Fozzy since he sounded like Tim the Bear, hahahaha, I love those Muppets jokes, they should do more.
More Ellen DeGeneres bashing, hahahahaha.
Peter giving Consuela his cell phone number, hahahahaha, that went too long, but Consuela is hilarious!!!!!
The Greece ending joke.
Ollie having no shouting lines was weird.
Joyce was a great new villainess and my favorite for totally bashing Lois good, hahahahaha, I knew she would turn out evil like Diane:eek::D!!!!!
Bonnie's line to Lois was brilliant/funny, hahahahaha.
In Joyce's flashback, Lois totally deserved it for what she did to poor Joyce, but interesting that Lois was a bigger jerk than Peter back in her high school years, woooow!!!!!
The Facebook joke, hahahaha.
The Chris/Meg bashing joke, hahahahaha.
Peter mentioning the random background characters in church.
Brian cheering up Lois was sweet, Brian is so likable now when he doesn't go bad.
Tina Feye's appearance, hahahahaha.
Cave Lois is super hot!!!!!
Glen's huge reaction at the movie was  hilarious, hahahahahaha, one of the best character freak-out reactions EVER!!!!!
Stewie's possible father at the end was interesting, I hope to see him return.

I hope they'll do more of the Lois/Joyce rivalry which the show needs more female character development and it's great that they all have major enemies which Lois's previous enemies was Stewie/Gloria Ironbachs/Francis, Peter>Carter/The Giant Chicken/James Woods, Stewie>Olivia/Bertram/The New Brian, Meg>Connie, and Brian>Francis/Glen Quagmire/the CBS executives.

It's hotly disputed whether Passion of the Christ is an honest depiction or not. What isn't disputed is that it focuses an inordinate amount of time on the violence, to the point that it bordered on anti-Semitic to many (probably apt considering Gibson's later behavior).

It may be a tired old joke, but that doesn't mean there isn't a basis for it in reality.

Which is the point: you can't call it bigoted when everything has a root in reality. Just because you don't like being called out on certain aspects doesn't mean you get to cry bigot like some great White shield.

I don't understand what you mean by white shield. I was referring to the tone and mocking of the Faith in general to be bigoted. I understand Pastors have done that in the past. It's just frustrating that because a few Pastors did some despicable things, that every Pastor on earth has to be a punchline now.

The whole tone of the episode was done with such contempt, disrespect and mockery that it bordered on bigotry.

What really bothered me the most was seeing Lois cover up the cross with that pornographic film. That was crossing a line.

Family Guy is and has always been a sharp satirical comedy. The intro revolves around mocking those old "wholesome" family shows. If you can't take it, then you shouldn't be watching ever, since it's highly hypocritical if you can watch it except for when it turns its focus on your own beliefs.

I already acknowledged the fact that Family Guy is an offensive show. I just thought this episode crossed a line from offensive to bigoted.

There's been other episodes in the past that have mocked other Religions, races, and political views, but always would have some redeeming quality or message to whatever it was they were mocking. This episode lacked any sort of redeeming factor towards the subject they were mocking, which was Christians.

Aaaand add another reason to ban Facebook...:p

Also, the one time Quagmire is on church and he sees Lois' porn film. What a lucky day for him. Also, did anyone notice Sheamus the pirate while they were singing on church at the beginning?

However, the most amusing part in the episode is Meg (At this rate, it's not even surprising that she'll get a one scene wonder in almost every episode) insulting Chris about Lois. You read that right. Meg and Chris apperantly switched personalities for this scene...

I don't know. I thought there was an ep scheduled where Stewie tried to be more evil. I was thinking that was supposed to be last night's episode. Maybe they decided not to air it because they thought he was evil enough. Lol. I guess I just misread the TV listings.

I liked Peter making fun of the background characters as well. I guess he was sort of breaking the fourth wall there.

Yeah. I forgot to mention the Muppet reference here. They really got Miss Piggy's personality down. Too bad they didn't actually show her.

That actually might be a good idea for a video game like 'Smash Brothers' or something. I think a 'Family Guy' fighting game might exist somewhere, but I'm sure they didn't use all those ideas. It might be an idea for a sequel.
