False "New Voice Message" alert from T-Mobile

Maybe a SIM issue. I have the N73 and never had that problem until i changed my SIM after having some other issues. As soon as i stepped out of the Tmobile store and turned my phone on - "beep beep" - new voicemail. NOT!
its annoying, yes. but you know the drill.

Bingo! I am having this problem now and I just replaced my SIM card because the other one died. I though it was because I was using a Movistar SIM before.

The one that comes up when the phone is turned on is "New Voice Message" and the VM icon is the tape but it has a "blank" tape in there (if that makes sense). Usually when I have a new VM I will get the message "New voice message on Line 1" and the VM icon will have black dots in the cartridge.

So for some reason the phone is being notified in a different way every time I turn it on. If I get a VM and delete it, it gets the VM clear SMS and it stays that way until rebooted. The funny thing is, the message comes up as soon as the phone turns on, before it registers on the network.

I'm thinking it's an issue with the newer SIM cards. My previous SIM card was from when I originally signed up with T-Mobile 2 years ago.

edit: when I delete the new voice message from the mailbox, the phone receives the SMS that tells it to clear the icon, and the message "New Voice Message" pops up for a second, then it blinks and then it disappears along with the VM icon.

I just signed up with T-Mobile on Saturday and my E61 has this same problem. Turning the phone off and on causes the voicemail indicator to come on even though you don't have a voicemail, and it stays on until you get a real voicemail and delete it. I've found I can turn it off with one call to my voicemail, simply by using the "send message" (the 2 key), sending a voice message to myself, and then listening to the message and deleting it. All that can be done on the same call. When I delete the message, my phone's voicemail indicator turns off and stays off until I get a real voicemail or turn the phone off and on (whichever comes first).

I suspect you have no clue what you are talking about. Postulating possible programming-related causes from an unexpected result is rather silly. Sorry to be down on you, I realize this minor issue might be a huge ordeal for you (or that you possibly have other problems with the company) - but there's just as much chance that it's a result of an infinite possibilities of coding errors/missed cases as there is that it's a missing break (even assuming they are using a c-type language.) I don't understand the purpose of posting a quick code snippit which actually makes no sense. I'd hope they don't have anything even remotely resembling that in operation.

Good luck getting it fixed, hopefully with the new sim-card responses you'll be a step closer to solving your problem.

The same thing started happening with my N70 in November out of the blue after a year without any problems. I got a new SIM card, didn't fix the problem. Called Tmo support, spent an hour trying different things with the tech doing some things to the network and such.

Haven't been able to resolve problem.

Guys, i had the same problem and founs solution. I posted it here:

just read thru.

Ok, finally got my E61 in. Updated to newest firmware. Using a 3 y/o T-Mobile sim. I don't get those false voicemail alerts. I've cycled the phone a dozen times without a single one. I did get a voicemail alert once, but I actually had a voicemail.

Actually, I would think it is a SIM card issue. I have had T-Mobile for years now. starting with T-Mobile EasySpeak (now T-Mobile To Go) and recently postpaid T-Mobile last September (think of it as a birthday gift to myself). From what I experienced, the newer Giesecke & Devrient SIM cards are causing the problem. Some of these SIM cards are glossy if you want to try and identify yours. They are causing phones not recognized by the T-Mobile system to receive the falsh Voicemail alert. I tried the SIM card in my (Cingular but recognized) branded 6010 and there was no indicator. However, my N80, K608i (for the short time I had it), and my RAZR (eww, I know) showed the indicator everytime I turned the phone on and off. I popped my Gemplus SIM into all of my phones except the K608i and no indicator. I then used my non-branded SIM (another TMO2GO) into my phones and no indicator.

Diagnosis: The newer SIM cards are problematic when it comes to unbranded phones.

Treatment: How should I know? I tried everything lol
