False "New Voice Message" alert from T-Mobile

A false "New voice message" alert appears every time I turn on my Nokia N93. T-Mobile's techinical support person told me this is due to my having an unlocked phone without T-Mobile software and there is nothing T-Mobile can do about it.

This is a reason for me to consider changing carriers.

Maybe a FW update will solve this. I dont think their is one available for the N93 yet but this would hopefully solve that....that Tmo answer is really a "duh...I dont know" I've only used unlocked phones for years and never had an issue because of it. I've used voicestream/t-mobile in the past and never once had a branded phone...and again, never had a problem. Of course if you switch to Cingular your N93 will become a nice camera/camcorder and nothing else without the 850 freq.

False "New Voice Message" alert from T-Mobile

Alas, an upgrade to the latest firmware available did not solve the problem. T-Mobile took responsibility for sending the false message, saying it was due to the unlocked phone announcing its presence and T-Mobile reacting as if it were a new voicemail event.

I imagine something like this:

Code:
switch (response) ?{

??case IS_UNRECOGNIZED_PHONE_TYPE:
??case NEW_VOICEMESSAGES:
?? ? ? ?display_alert();

// ...

}
Unfortunately, the programmer neglected to break; between cases.

well just dont turn off your phone, besides, u wont get charge for the sms so its all good. But i havent heard of other ppl like krazykritter having that problem, and i know he is using a n73 with tmo~

I'm also on T-Mobile, and have an E61. Mine does this. Been with them since 2000, with several different phones, all unbranded and never had this issue.

It's a minor annoyance, since I rarely turn my phone off. Perhaps you should change carriers.

Like I said, it doesn't bother me. I wouldn't let something so simple make me change carriers. Perhaps he has other underlying issues which led him to such measures.

I get this too!!!!
But I get a new text message that if I open it locks up the phone but after a reboot I can view the message, it's a black character followed by a D with a line through it and another block character.

Nokia E50

TMobile won't be able to do anything about it, it's not their phone, not their firmware.
Just deal with it.

This is not a carrier specific issue as I have a friend on Cingular using a Moto phone that has the same issue. I had the issue, but was able to get rid of the false voice mail indicator.

The trick is to use another phone. You may need to try this multiple times.

Pulled my SIM and put it in my 6822. Left a VM on the phone and deleted it. Plunked SIM into my E61 and voila, VMI is gone.

I did have the lastest firmware installed, so I am not sure if it mattered or not?

Wow, i feel bad for you guys. I've been using imported phones on T-Mobile for atleast three years now and never once had such problems. The only time such an icon appears is when I skip a voicemail .

BTW 850 is overrated I get reception in places where other people don't
