Fall 2009 HD channel number changes

I assume we will have to reprogram all our timers. I hope they give us good warning so we don't miss any shows because of the change.

They are only available in the newer generation of subscription packages. If you have the Locals packaging, you will likely not receive them.

They tried last spring...and it failed..so I guess they are trying to git-r-done prior to the November sweeps...

I called Bell to ask if the pvr would automatically migrate timers to the new channels(wishfull thinking) and was told the old channels will be hanging out until mid February.

Why not do what Dish does and remap the HD channel from whatever number to the SAME channel number as the SD? If you have a HD receiver it automatically goes to the HD channel, if not you get the SD.

Not a hard thing to do... and way easier for the WAF.

More room for expansion I think. Having all the HD in channels 800-900 was never going to be possible on a long term basis. Now they can fit them into logical groupings based on the HD pack to which they are assigned.

If anything these new channel assignments sort of suggest that Bell may be about to announce a major increase in the number of HD services (hoping, hoping..) to accommodate CBC Newsworld HD, History Television HD etc.

Why not? It's clear that this time the change is working. Bell isn't going to roll it back. You might as well update your system.

I would assume that they will run both the current channels and the new channels simultaniously for a period of time to give people time to adjust. This would not take any additional bandwidth as the channels would just be copies of each other.

My concern is the reports of channels appearing then disappearing. I guess my real question is: "Have the HD channels in the thousand range go to steady state?"

Thanks.

BellTV cannot add very many new channels without either going to MPEG4 or adding a satellite. They sold all the TPs on 72.5 to Dish so that's not happening. They are still renting a lot of non-MPE4 HD receivers as well. Are they going to pull some new bandwidth out of a hat?

And, yes, the channel move will screw up every timer on every 800 channel that gets moved. Better start redoing those timers now. BellTV, of course, couldn't have worse timing. I just got through recreating all the timers for Fall previews and returning shows.

Regarding the Sports HD channels: Based on the placement of the channels so far I think it's safe to assume that the Sports channels will be in the 1400 series.

Ok so I spent 20 minutes 2 days ago reprogramming all of my HD timers to the new 1000 series. Yesterday when looking at my scheduled events, many were missing. I noticed that I lost SUNTV on channel 1055. A few others were gone too. Today they are back again. I spent another 20 minutes shifting my timers back to the 800 series.

Are you guys noticing this too? Personally I don't think it's safe to switch over yet. I'm hoping Bell will send us something in writing stating the cutover date.

Are these "new" channels going to be free HD or eventually added to an HD Theme Pack?

Also Drewsat...welcome back...are there any more new HD channels on the horizon?

Encore Avenue HD and Speed HD would be awesome.

I think it's safe to assume that the sports will be in the 1400's as well seeing as how the new lineup is posted in the first post.

I don't know if remapping would be a good idea. I've got a 9242 feeding a secondary (SD) television, and in some cases the SD channel will air a program in full screen whereas the HD version will air the same program in widescreen. Remapping would limit access to the fullscreen version.
