Celtic were the only team in the entire United Kingdom last year to hold a minute's applause, and for Remembrance day, a minute's silence should be the only mark of respect given at a game. It is different to the respect given to an individual who has passed away, where an applause to celebrate their life can be appropriate.
Sadly there was some Republican group last year handing out flyers to ask fans to walk out in protest! Like Kaffo says, Celtic do have a section of their support who refuse to remain silent during these marks of respect.
Im not slating all Celtic fans, just the small minority. Celtic football club should do the minutes silence and any fans who wish to "protest" should have their season tickets ripped up.
Celtic FC's social statement says the club have no political agenda and they should ensure their ground is not used for such political protests - not bow down to the bigots and silence them by doing an applause instead.
My grandad was a Celtic fan of Irish descent and fought in WWII (lying about his age to get into the army at that) - they are insulting thousands of other men just like him who were in a similar position.
Bowing down to a bunch of twisted neds who should bugger off across the Irish sea if they dont like the UK so much is not on - Celtic should do the silence as a mark of respect.
Respecting the Irish roots of the club is one thing, allowing terrorist sympathisers to win over the tens of thousands of Celtic fans who do pay their respects, applause or silence, is another.
Celtic are not a political club, and should not bow down to political opinion of bigots.
Celtic have no right to force any applause on Falkirk and i hope Falkirk do the right thing. If Celtic choose to do an applause at their own ground - i can understand, though not accept why. However, at another ground, its out of their hands.
