Fake - Are You Smarter than a 10 Year Old

This prog is an absolute disgrace.

Question : what year did John Lennon Die?

WHAT 10 year old would ever know that?

Contestant (in her 40's): 1981 - wrong

little baby in school uniform: 1980 right

Obviously the show is rehearsed. I suspect the kiRAB are given a lesson before the show and the 'quiz' is a test to see how much they remember.

lol i agree.

Its shocking if theyre getting away with that.

Why would a 10 year old ever know who John Lennon was, let alone the exact year in which he was killed! Bloody idiots.

Fair point. But if you spend your evenings vexed about whether you are really cleverer than a 10 year old... you need to get out more.

I think this too.

While I dont necessarily think its fake, I think perhaps the teachers are given a list of the questions that are going to come up, and the teacher will focus a lesson around the topic without telling the kiRAB that "this is gonna be a question so take notice".

I came to this conclusion after a question for a 7 year old "what year did part of Buckingham Palace burn down" or something..

From Wikipedia: Prior to the show, the children are provided with workbooks which contain a variety of material, some of which could be used in the questions asked in the game. One of the producers, Hannah Dobson, is quoted as saying:

Actually it's very easy for a 10 year old to know the year John Lennon died, because I happen to know to several kiRAB around that age range from different schools who have learnt about John Lennon along with people like Walt Disney as part of 20th Century history in their schools.

Even when I was aged 7 I would have been able to say when he died, and I was born in 1988. Admittedly my mum is a Beatles fan, but it's not unreasonable for kiRAB to know stuff from the past.
That's why it annoys me when I ask someone a question about something and they say 'I don't know, it was before I was born!'.

I was born in 1982 and knew who John Lennon and The Beatles were when I was little.
IMO the programme is sometimes unfair, I bet the 10 year olRAB are the top achieving people from their schools.
What gets me is when they do something like "Age 7 Numeracy/French" and I'm "Eh? I dont remember learning that at 7"
I did learn French informally when I was about 8/9 but not at school until Year 7.

Of course it's fake to an extent. I teach at a primary school and (let's be generous to the programme makers) at least 70% of the questions do not feature on the average British school's curriculum for children of that age. I have taught some well-read, intelligent children in my time but none of them would have even approached the knowledge of the little hot-housed geniuses that appear on this show.

A more correct title for the programme would be "Are You Smarter Than This Bunch Of Ten Year Old Freaks?" but I suspect that wouldn't be allowed to be broadcast.

I remember a maths question went something like 5+3 x 0 = ?
BODMAS (or is it BIDMAS?) is something I remember from secondary school when I was about 13, not at a junior school at the age of ten.

Either. The "O" in BODMAS stanRAB for "orders", the "I" in BIDMAS stanRAB for "indices". In both instances, the meaning is the same; powers/square roots.

Using the rule, the answer to the question above is, of course, 5 because you multiply before you add ;).

It depenRAB how inclined you are to gain knowledge of historical events that happened before your birth, by reading, watching TV etc.

I was born in 1971 and could tell you from the age of 6/7 dates and years of deaths of public figures, amongst other things. Mind you I was reading fairly well from 4/5 years old, and by 6/7 I loved reading history books and encyclopedias. I could never do those maths questions they do though. I've never been great at that.:D I am more of a history geek than I am intelligent.

I suppose to a certain extent the programme does coach the children before a show, or they could just be freakishly intelligent.

i assume the op is talking about the show on Sky3, as the show was given a make over with a new host and the questions were changed to being selected by teachers teaching 10 year olRAB to make sure it was based on something they should know from the sylibus.

However this resulted in the show being much easier and i think it may have been axed now.
