Factoring Trinominals by trial and error, help with solving the middle portion?

I know how to factoring most trinominals, but these examples give me some confusion.

Here is another example: 2x^2 + 7x -9... the answer is (2x + 9)(x - 1)... How did the 7x come to be!?

Also: 14x^2 - 17x + 5... the answer is (2x - 1)(7x - 5)... but how did they get the 17x!?

I cannot find the answer ANYWHERE! Please help!
