Has anyone ever gotten a facial before? I was just reading an article in Seventeen magazine about facials...if anyone has gotten them did they help breakouts?

I've gotten a few facials before- just general "cleansing facials" (not specific for acne) and despite the fact that it is meant to clear out your skin, they made me break out really badly. When you get a facial not only is someone constantly touching your skin but they are also slathering on lots of different heavy creams, so if you have sensitive skin I would be careful.

I used to like them because I find them relaxing. But my derm told me not to ever get one again. He said that they can temporarily make skin look better (i.e. directly after) but that they'll cause acne and your skin will get worse. He said all the picking, squeezing and steaming and the heavy products are terrible for acne and that an "extraction" by someone who doesn't really know what they're doing can really damage the skin. Basically he said that acne and facials shouldn't mix.

What your derm said *can* be true, but it doesn't *have* to be. While it is true that some facialists are clueless and/or untrained when it comes to acne, this is not always the case.

I admit that I have had some bad facials that really involved nothing more than some minor extractions and a slathering of heavy cream. THIS will not help your skin. I did break out from those, and my skin looked no better.

However, I used to get regular bi-weekly facials from a properly trained European facialist. I would have European deep cleansing facials with PROPER extractions (not a lot of squeezing-a sterile needle was used to empty the pus for deep and/or infected pimples), and proper products. Small pimples were removed with tissues and fingertips, and not with rough tools. My skin looked amazing and clear, and my breakouts were reduced. My skin never broke out after a facial, nor was it red for more than 1 day, if that. Generally I walked out with clear and even toned skin.

Some people prefer to get facials such as this done at their derm's office (more money for the derm!). They are often called "medical facials". Some involve resurfacing techniques, but not all. Anything involving laser MUST be done by a qualified and specially trained RN or MD, in a Doctor's office.

Many places do not do true European facials, so you need to search for those who do, and who are properly trained and certified.

The bottom line is this, if you have acne/oil/sensitive/problem skin, a regular "relaxing" facial is not going to cut it. It will not help unclog your pores, and may even make your skin worse.

That said, a proper deep cleaning European facial SHOULD help.

I have moved from my home city (and facialist) and I am back in school, so $200/month on facials are sadly a thing of the past for me.... :(

But they DID help.

i have heard great things about microdermabrasion for acne,am trying this myself next week.
