Facebook - what is the difference between news feed and status update?

Status update is what people write at the top of the page under the heading "what's on your mind". News feed is the different postings that show up on your home page. The news feed contains the status updates of your friends, but it also contains other types of postings, such as what people are doing on different applications.

news feed are the news from facebook or any activity on facebook while the status update means updated profile. well, it's only what i guess as i did not change the setting of my BF's account there.
