Facebook chat is different that other ppl?

my facebook chat opens a new window when i open it, and when u go to another window, and then come back to the chat it signs me out.
but with other ppls, when they talk to ppl, a new window doesnt open up, there is just a little pop up that comes at the bottom of the screen.
how can u make my facebook chat like that? its really annoying cuz i have to open a seperate window to see if ppl replied to me.
