The anime was pretty good, but yeah for completeness of the story I preferred the manga. Shounen sports anime about football, lots of over the top action; think prince of tennis or inazuma eleven, in the team "themes" and special attacks. Story is about Sena who has been picked on most of his high school career and also babied a lot by his childhood friend (a girl) which in turn leads to further bullying. The two members of the football team (the Deimon Devil Bats) realize he actually has some talent, recruit him, and put him in a helmet with a visor hence the series' name. Typical high school sports anime, they recruit the rest of their team, fight tooth and nail through the tournaments, etc. it gets pretty god damn over the top after the tournament arc although that is by no means itself boring either.
Favorite match up was probably with the [blackout]Hakushu Dinosaurs[/blackout] since we got to seem some of the most difficult opponents and in my opinion some of the best rivals and challenges they face from a strategic perspective. Second fav team would be the Wild Gunmen, although I'd like them a hell of a lot more without Riku. I just can't stand smug white haired midget prodigies. (I'm looking at you Captain Toshiro.) Really didn't care for the following match storywise against the [blackout]Alexanders[/blackout] since they were just such typical "final boss" material and outclasses the Devil Bats utterly and only lose to burning shounen spirit basically. I mean yeah I understand it's that sort of show, I just prefer matches like they had throughout the series that involved some out of the box thinking and just felt more enjoyable when the plans came to fruition.
Anyway it's definitely a great series and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes shounen stuff or sports anime.
