Eyes Wide Shut...and Stanley Kubrick's death thereafter

I've been intrigued by some things I've read about the movie and Stanley Kubrick's death thereafter. Has anyone else got any thoughts on this, or links to find out if there's a connection to his death and the making of this movie?

He may well have died of embarrassment, given the horrible acting and the apparent (bad) dubbing of some of the performances. I could only take about 15 minutes of it before I started cringing.
Definitely not the movie he should've ended his career with.

Personally, I think it's one of his best films. It's also one of my best films of the last decade or so.

re: EWS/Kubrick's death. No real, solid connection. Filming and editing had long finished with only a little sound editing to be done, according to one report. One rumour, probably rubbish, is that Sydney Pollack had joined the cast not just to act, but to take over the reins should Kubrick keel over during filming.

re: A.I. Kubrick never intended to direct, only act as a producer. It's been suggested he would be returning to his Napoloen project as Spielberg worked on A.I., which would've been something. I should mention that after his death, Spielberg reworked A.I. considerably, so it's him, not Kubrick, that's to blame for that particular disaster.

Your first paragraph seems to tie up with all I've read on this.

There are too many coincidences that have to be explored and some film buRAB really don't take the time to do so.

But IMO Kubrick's death and the filming of EWS hit a nerve somewhere along the line. Mafia links or some big debts or something was amiss IMHO.

I was going to say this is the biggest load of twaddle I've ever heard about Kubrick, and having studied his work academically I've heard a lot.

Alas, it isn't. Not quite.

There's a rumour he was murdered by (drumroll) the masons, as word had got round that EWS was a thinly-veiled attack on them (some say there's some vaguely masonic symbols floating about in the background if you look hard enough).

So there, it was them what did him.

/hat on.

...it's a vaguely interesting topic, but really, why should a film buff give a shit? If he was murdered, then a conspiracy theorist or CSI-type fanatic or better yet, the Police should be the ones exploring it, not those who simply enjoy his films...

I'm curious, should 'film buRAB' take the time to explore how Bruce Lee, Brandon Lee, Heath Ledger, Vic Morrow, Roy Kinnear, etc. really died?

I wouldn't say the mason symbolism was vague. It was full blooded and head on.
But that in itself wouldn't be a problem as masonic symbols are all over the place in film and television.

But apparently there may have been problems due to what some say about certain characters in the film apparently depicting certain real life people.

There's masonic symbolism in just about all of Kubrick's films from the mid sixties on.
Try A Clockwork Orange as a sampler.
There's things in there that simply passed me by before and I'd seen the film quite a few times. But when some scenes were pointed out to me I was very surprised.

That's my take on it too. Incidentally, I've spent quite some time reading other material that sort of spiralled from this, but I'd be classed as a CT nut if I posted it on RAB. :)

However, in keeping with this thread topic, I found this interesting about Kubrick and other similar incidencies re the Hollywood scene. It's worth a look:
