Extreme Tailbone pain! Please help :(

My tailbone hurts obscenely bad. It hurts to sit down, bend over, and do things like try and get up off the floor. I'm 19 and I'm not pregnant. The pain is (sorry if it's TMI) about an inch under the start of my bum crack and feels about the size of a golf ball, but seems to spread out into my muscles directly to either side. It hurts so bad I cry out in pain if I sit down too forcefully or the wrong way. I don't have medical insurance at the moment, so I can't just go see a doctor. If you could please help I'd appreciate it. It's almost brought me to tears.

If there is redness, swelling, or problems with bowel movement and you have a fever, go to the ER, because it could be a dangerous infection. Trust me on this one.

Otherwise, it could be a lot of things. Is it an ache, like a muscle or bone? Did you possibly injure that part of your body?

Once in a while like, every few years or so that happens to me.
With me though, it's just a muscle strain. It hurts so bad! Beyond words, it hurts. It's like I pulled a muscle in my lower back or something and it is in a spot in my lower back just where you described. So, any movement I make involves the movement of that muscle. For me, after a time it goes away. It takes up to 3 weeks.
Oh but the pain is just something awful. Because no matter the move you make you use the muscles in the back and they can't help but be used.
But I find for me that I keep on moving and do certain stretches and as time goes by it eventually goes away. It's almost like when you get a kink in your neck and you can't move your neck? Yeah, it's like that. I've learned that if I try to sit very still or lay and not move because if I move it hurts, that that is the worst thing I can do. I have to keep moving.
I don't know if your problem is similar to mine.
I don't have a back problem. I'm in very good shape. Just once in a blue moon a muscle in my body gets strained or kinked or something. The pain is terrible.

I know that is serious pain. The Tail bone or coccyx is a very sensitive area! And every movement affects that area. I am dealing with this right now, and mine is purely from tension in my back that reaches down and inflamed the nerves at the coccyx.

As long as there is no redness or obvious swelling or hot feeling that indicates infection, then likely you pulled a muscle that affects that area. That is the most common cause. And believe me, any pulled muscle can affect the muscles in that area...funny thing...they are all connected.

You can take aspirin or ibuprofen for pain and to reduce inflammation, as stated on the label, not more than stated. If you take it as directed, then the anti-inflammation effect builds up. DO NOT OVERDOSE on it, trying to get pain free...it is harmful that way.

Apply a cold pack to the area for 15 minutes, then remove it for 20 minutes, and do this several times a day to lower the inflammation. I get the most relief with the cold pack (use ice in a towel if that is all you have. Use a bag of frozen vegetales.) Don't sit on it...it is too hard!

Try to stay off the area, which means laying, not sitting, as much as possible.

If you must sit, use pillows to adjust a way to avoid pressure on the coccyx as much as possible. Some prefer a foam or soft pillow, and others prefer a U-shaped neck pillow or a donut pillow with a hole in the middle.

If you are constitpated that can cause pressure on the tail bone nerves and cause serious pain, so maybe for now use a stool softener. Or take Magnesium Citrate (which is one that is easily digested, if you get the wrong type it won't digest)

If you do think there is infection because of redness and a hot spot, then do get to Emergency ASAP! Infection can quickly get into your vital organs from there so don't ignore it if it is infected. But most often tail bone pain, as horrid as it feels, is just a muscular/nerve issue.

You can call a hospital and ask for an out patient clinic, and you can deal with the cost later. You can always negotiate the cost down, or negotiate payments. Don't be afraid to get appropriate care. It would be cheaper to see a doctor and get antibiotics than to go to ER, though! So check that out if needed.

I hope you get relief soon! :(

regardless of the cause, if you're in that much pain you should see a doctor.

secondly, it could be something as serious as a cyst. a few months ago, my friend had the same problems you're having. she went to the doctor and they found a cyst in her tailbone. she made an appointment to get it removed, but a few days later it popped on its own. maybe that will happen to you as well, but you really should see a doctor.
