Extreme Movies - where is the line?

I like to draw my own comic books. They have many different themes, but I try to draw what is around me with a more extreme edge. For a long time I have liked the idea of making a movie. I think I have a good plot which is an amalgamation of several of my comic plots.

Anyway, my question is - in my comics there are some extreme scenes and I would like to have a similar look and feel in my "movie". I have seen films like 9 Songs (adult scenes) and Kill Bill (violence), but wondered where the line was and if extreme sex and violence in a film detracts from the ploy, characters and script.

I bought it cheap on R1. Not sure if it's been released in the UK yet.

Very good dvd package. French soundtrack, but has subs, and has a fascinating commentry by the french director, subs for that too! lol.

I own a lot of films, from the likes of the 80's 'video nastys' and the current so called 'torture porn'.

I don't think any of them I own detract from the script with their violence.

There's bound to be plenty of 'normal' films which include a violent and unnecessary scene, but at the moment, I can't think of any. Sorry!

I recently got the Directors Cut of the infamous Murder Set Pieces .

The version edited by 12 minutes was banned in the UK so you might check that one out as extreme cinema.

Sure makes Zombie Flesheaters and I Spit On Your Grave (even uncut) look tame

Agree Murder Set Piece is probably one to look at, I have the REG-1 version, which I believe is the best version regarding uncut.
You speak of comic books, would you want your film to be in the style of anime. If so check out Spriggan

Apart from the usual ethical taboo areas, I think there is NO line Certainly not one that's already been crossed, as long as you are clear who your audience is.
You name the scene and its already been done.

You might find this forum interestingCult Movie Forum, there's some really nice guys there and they will happily talk about exploitation films etc (I'm one of them)

I'd actually say Murder Set Pieces is a perfect example of violence taken to the extreme at the expense of plot and characters. Admittedly though I only saw half of it before I had to turn it off because it was (beyond) godawful, so I suppose it could have improved after that. Hard to imagine though.

Think a friend saw that at Fright Festival, whenever it was on, think it was that festival. Said it was absolutely one of the worst movies he had seen in a long time and wish he hadn't spent money on it.

Why was the film banned here? I heard something about a child actress.

Yes there was an awful seen with a young girl, not one I wish to discuss, but to be honest there was alot more than that.

No it did not improve, I actually found myself setting the dvd counter to countdown to see how much more I had to watch.
Whilst I agree with your point somewhat about plot and Characters, it was an indie film made on a tight budget if I remember right. Whilst this does not make it acceptable, it does give some artistic licence.
However as a horror genre fan I had to watch to the end.

That would be the point where I turned off. Moving from murdering hookers to knifing kiRAB with no explanation. Completely ridiculous.

Glad I didn't miss anything then. And I take your point about it being an indie film but I don't think it really excuses the complete lack of anything resembling a coherent plot. Up until that point anyway :p
