explain to me financial aid please?

first you will file fafsa. you typically file this earlier in the year you willl go to college. so if you plan on going to college fall of 2010 then you would file fafsa in march of 2010. once you file your fafsa you will get a EFC (expected family contribution) at the end of your app. this app is sent to the school and school determines aid. if your family is lower income your EFC will be 0 but if your parents have decent jobs there will be an amount. if your parents make more then 75k a year then you wont get anything.

a few months after filing fafsa your school will send you an award letter. it will say how much aid they have given you based off of the fafsa report. you can get both grants, loans and scholarships.

grants dont have to be paid back. neither do scholarships. but you have to pay back loans after you have graduated or stopped school for 6 months or longer.

if your EFC is more then 0. lets say 3000. then your family will be responsible for paying that amount for that school year and the rest wil be covered.

if this didnt help talk to your school counselor so they can clear up and unanswered questions.

basically: if you are poor, you will get alot. if you are well off you will get nothing. and everyone else falls in between.
