Explain the phrase “example is much more potent than precept”?

Explain the phrase “example is much more potent than precept” as it relates to the importance of a good reputations.

Precept would be "Do as I say and not as I do" and example would be "Do as I do". If you tell your children that cursing is bad, but you curse all the time, they will do as you do, not as you say. In relation to the Bible: it's full of stories on how people lead good lives, which serve as an example. The story of Jesus's life being one of them. With everything people were willing to give him, he could've become a very wealthy man. But then, when he would tell people: "Share with those less fortunate!" they wouldn't have trusted him, and they wouldn't have done as he instructed them to do. But because he gave away everything he had when someone needed it, people saw his way of life as an example and were (are still) willing to live their lives as he had.
