Many people seem to have some sort of resistance to allowing cultures to merge at times. Sooo many times I hear people complain about foreigners "not respecting our culture" and that they should "conform to our culture if they want to live here", which is a shame that people can not accept cultural diversity, especially considering that my country (Australia) is no stranger to cultural diversity... but nope, people still aren't used to it and resist cultural diversity for what seems to be to me nothing more than selfish reasons.
On top of that, cultures outside of the "dominant culture" (in my case Australian/western culture) are at times not understood. My mother is an example of this; coming from China, she naturally got quite a big culture shock. Many years later she still can't conform to Australian culture because it's so "alien", and on the other side of the fence, a lot of Australians don't understand her behaviour (due to her cultural upbringing) and often misinterpret her actions (commonly she's mistaken as been stuck up or rude because she keeps her family life highly private, as is the norm where she comes from, for example).
In short: we humans seem to prefer culture that is "familiar", and want a single culture rather than a merged one.
