Expired registration and inspection in houston texas, car towed help?

Okay so here's what happened. I was driving my car even though my registration and inspection were expired. I ran out of gas and pulled my car onto the shoulder of the freeway. I grabbed my gas can and walked to the gas station that was just off the feeder. When I returned with a gallon of gas 10 minutes later my car was gone. I immediately called 911 and they dispatched two officers who took down the license plate number and registered the car as stolen. They told me, just in case, to call the houston tow line to see if it's been towed. This was Friday, it's now Thursday the following week and it still hasn't been registered as towed. With no gas in the tank, however, the only logical explanation is that whoever "stole" it had a tow truck to move it with.

I didn't inform the officers that the vehicle registration had expired. Not to mention, the car title AND my vehicle registration renewal letter were both in the glove box of the vehicle.

My question is, even though the VIN# has been reported stolen, is there a chance it was still towed? The fact that it was parked on the shoulder of the freeway and the registration was expired(meaning there was, at the time, no registered owner) would have qualified it as abandoned, but would it not have turned up already seeing as how it's been reported as stolen? If it was towed, is the reason it hasn't been registered in the city's system as towed due to the fact that the registration is expired? And who would I contact to find out exactly where my car is, if it was towed and not registered, and how to get it back?
