expert poets please help?

I have been reading a plethora of books on poetry and from past poets and a question has come up for poets of today that I do not know how to answer.
Part of being a writer is that you must read within other poems to go beyond the limits of what has already been written in the past. My question is, how does a poet or even a writer in the 21st century, read within a poem or a piece of writing to find something new to write about that has not been written before in the past? I understand that this is one of those struggles poets and writers must face in order to create his/her own voice, but how do you manage such a struggle to find the new in life to write about? Is it better to be original or unoriginal?

Thanks for any help.

you will rarely find something new to write that is not silly or nonsense. I think writing is taking something that already is and putting new perspective on it. It's original and unoriginal all at once, that's the beauty of it.

Picasso once said "good artists copy, great artists steal".

But the first thing you should know about art is that it doesn't make any difference how a piece of art is made, weather it is original or unoriginal, cheap or unintelligent, the only thing that matters is the effect it produces on people.

So, it's fine to write about things that already have been done.

A new style that has been developing though is including scientifcal imagery because this new era of scientifcal knowledge has not been around for a long time.

I don't know what you mean by "read within", most writers look for new ways to show/say/bring to life something that moves them in some way. Look around these boards, very few new topics, but some new and interesting voices.

You struggle to find the new because you are driven by art and language and desire to create.
