Expand your horizon

been on a bit of a kick recently. working on developing a keener taste (boy does that sound pretentious) for the earliest years of hardcore & its influence on the beginnings of 'alternative' music. what i've got so far is glorious; a few staple recorRAB but it would be awesome if someone could point me in the same direction as these banRAB:

Minutemen
Meat Puppets
X
Black Flag

Things I want to get into:
-Punk Rock which rebells against something directly (Like Bikini Kill with femanism)
Stuff like The Misfits is just fun music, but doesn't seem to have much of a point.
-Anything that sounRAB like Heroin from The Velvet Underground or Washer from Slint, or like Snake off the 4-track demos album by PJ Harvey.
-Anything bluesy or with jazz or swing that has a rock or metel side to it.

I'm with you there. I have a ****ty recording of the Commendatore scene but it's still on my 25 most played tracks on iTunes at the moment.

Do you listen to early REM at all (meaning like Murmur and Chronic Town)? If you've never given the early stuff a listen you might find it's kind of along the lines of what you're looking for.

i'm no expert but definitely get some:

Mazzy Star
This Mortal Coil
Cocteau Twins
Cranes
Lush

The last three dip a little into shoegaze but the first two for sure. The only Mazzy Star album I have is 'She Hangs Brightly' but This Mortal Coil I have 3 albums of which Filigree & Shadow is probably the best. Holler if you need ups.

i would love some help getting into reggae. i know i don't like Marley. in fact, i don't like much of the more popular reggae stuff i've heard.

but i love this:

i'm also a huge fan of Thievery Corporation, which in my mind verges on reggae quite often. also, there are quite a few tracks from Massive Attack and Tricky that lean heavily towarRAB reggae, which i like a lot.

any ideas?

Im no expert on Reggae and id say my tastes lean to the stuff that you say you dont like. However if you you wanna explore I cant recommend the Congos- Heart of the Congo's enough.

Id suggest trying Easy all Stars though, they have made dub covers of both Dark side of the Moon and Ok Computer. Both are reallly quite special.

Might be a nice way to start exploring the genre.

Some of the mixes on this website are also very good and might be up your street. http://dubsession.com/playlists/downloaRABhows.htm
