''Exciting New Dawn'' for five

Say what you like about Vanessa Feltz, she has infinitely more credibility than the loathsome Jeremy Kyle on the other (darker) side. And she's a decent presenter. I think her show will be an attractive alternative to the sickly sweet This Morning.

New dawn?

They're keeping the same imports that have been the channel's bedrock for the past eight years, they're sticking with one or two tried and tested commissions, and they're leading out of TWS with a has-been talk show presenter. SounRAB like the same old Five to me...

I doubt that was the last of the programming announcements. But let's face it, whatever they announced would have got slated by people on here anyway.

I sense some are just disappointed that no downmarket tack has been commissioned for them to condemn. Diddums!

I think Channel 5 are right to recommision shows that are obviously popular and do well for them, im very pleased to see The Hotel Inspector coming back.

As for Vanessa, yes she stopped being relevant 10 years ago but we dont know what kind of show she will be fronting yet, anything has to be better than Trisha repeats (who I have always felt has a smug self serving quality about her).

American dramas do well for Ch5 so they are going to stay, so far the homegrown drama and comedy they have produced has been a total let down (Minder, anyone?).

I just hope that Desmond doesnt do a deal for Big Brother as I would like to see that tired, dated format buried forever, I would also like to see him axe Live At Studio Five, the most pointless hour (or now 35 minutes) of TV I have seen in a long time.

Well then why have they chosen to go with a press release about a new dawn now?

My point is that that they're attempting to claim a renaissance is on the horizon, but they have nothing new in the offing.

Yes I remember Minder was going to be "big", I just knew before it even started that it would crash and burn.

However Im not sure The Sweeney is going to be remade for CH5 as a movie is due to be made next year.

The Sweeney remake isn't likely especially as the movie version is in development, Minder wasn't a success plus it's the sort of show that was of its era and can't be really modernised.

These remakes of old series never work - the series were popular in the first place because they were different and original. No doubt we'll be having a remake of Life on Mars in a year or two. Why don't the TV companies save their money or spend it on something truly original.

Basically, Doctor Who worked, and Battlestar Galactica worked. And they both worked because a) they were sci-fi, and remakes could utilise new technology to get better effects, and b) the production talent involved was immense.

Unfortunately, this has been misread by too many people as "nostalgia is in".
