Excessive content advice

Apologies if this has been mentioned before,tried searching but couldn't find anything.
Anyway,does anyone feel that the content warnins/advice issued with films these days is becoming excessive? On the trailer for 'The Day After Tomorrow' it says 'contains scenes of mild peril'. HELLO? IT'S A DISASTER MOVIE! Given that most people will try to find out something about the subject matter of a film before deciding to go to the cinema and see it I think it's reasonable to assume that you are going to see scenes of peril in a disaster movie!
Other examples that pi**ed me off include The Hulk(contains moderate violence and scary moments!),and 2 Fast 2 Furious(contains street racing!) HELLO? Again,if you've seen the first one or have seen publicity for these films you know you can expect to see scenes of street racing!
Also 'contains one use of strong language' is another one that annoys me. Why issue a warning about the whole film just because someone says,for example,'bloody hell' ONCE? What's next? ER and Casualty shown with a warning that 'this programme contains medical scenes' maybe??!!
 
They put them on 'cos most likely in todays compensation culture Britain, it is well within reason for Mrs Mum to take little kid to the flicks and for some innoccuous reason little kid winRAB up scared/wets the bed/starts beating his little sister up "because the man in the film did it" or "Because the film scared me".

Mrs mum says "They should have warned us." Sues the cinema, the distributor, the distributors dog etc... and causes hell for everyone concerned.

Basically it's just a form of protection from legal claims from parents/guardians who are too dumb to check a films content first.

The Yanks even go so far as to rate all their TV shows in case of this scenario - and they have voiceovers before the show such as "Due to violent content, parental discretion is advised" - on movies at 12 midnight! Also each show has to show for 5 seconRAB a little black box in the top left hand corner with its rating TV MA, PG13, R, U etc... and they have letter codes too to warn you LSVD etc,, L - Language, S = sexual content, V - violence, D = demonic imagery (so Bible bashers know to avoid it) etc..

I've also noticed that it can have the reverse intended effect. KiRAB can now 'hunt' violent and gore ridden films whilst rejecting those that merely offer the illusion of violence in the trailer; eg, "Naww man, don't wanna see that - it's only got 'mild bad language' in it..."
 
I know where you're coming from DP,I have of course seen those little 'TV:PG' boxes on American shows,I don't mind that so much but a lot of these warnings are unnecessary if you apply a little common sense-which sadly seems to be lacking in society these days.
 
Apologies for bumping this thread,but I really can't believe The Powers That Be felt it necessary to put 'Contains mild sci-fi action' on the Star Wars dvRAB!!!!

This really is taking the pi*s!!
 
Oh that's just stupid! What's next?

R18 Movies: "This film contains scenes of a sexual nature"
Westerns/Cowboy movies: "This film contains gunplay"
Scooby Doo 3: "This film contains a shite CGI animated dog"

Presumably where someone is in mild danger,as opposed to being in serious danger?

My point re Star Wars is that plenty of members of these boarRAB grew up with it,our parents didn't need a content warning to decide whether it was safe for us to watch,and it never did us any harm.
 
Does anyone remember the Channel 4 red triangle experiment where they showed movies with high sexual and violence content ?
All through the film they had that red triangle supposedly to warn viewers away. They quintupled their late night audiences !!!
 
i've been chuckling at these recently too. its becoming a nonsense.

i also heard today that some bloke ordered steak *rare* in a restaurant, and was asked to sign a disclaimer saying he wouldn't take action against the restaurant if he got any food poisoning.

it may be an urban myth, but given how ludicrous things are becoming, it probably isn't.

Again,apologies for bringing back this thread,but I've seen a couple more examples that are totally unnecessary or just plain stupid in my opinion.

Flightplan:new Jodie Foster film. Advertising poster says "Contains moderate violence and suspense"! Moderate violence maybe but 'suspense'? Come on,this is totally unnecessary. When it gets aired on tv the synopsis might say 'suspense thriller in which Jodie Foster plays.......",etc,that's fine,but putting 'this film contains suspense' on the advertising poster is completely ridiculous.

However,this one is the best yet,and left me totally confused as to what it's trying to warn us about! On the case for the dvd of War Of The WorlRAB it says "contains sustained menace,threat and moderate horror"! What the hell is "sustained menace" meant to mean?

"Contains scenes of an explosion. Unsuitable for viewing by anyone with an aversion to loud noise"!

Or how about "On The Buses-contains public transportation vehicles"??!!
 
Believe it of not there are still many many people who will watch stuff DESPITE warnings like this and then complain about the content! They are just natural born complainers (the little known Oliver Stone movie) and LOVE to be outraged. A kind of voyeur if you will. Like The Daily Mail with legs I guess, or Points Of View with a pulse.
 
Have to admit that I was rather annoyed with ITV2 the other week when they screened the Wicker Man at midnight. They gave the warning "contains scenes of a sexual nature and pagan rituals".

The pagan rituals included in that film were essentially fertility rites, including Maypole dancing. Ok so the ending was pretty violent, but that isnt a modern day pagan ritual.
I don't mean to get on my soap box and usually I let slurs on the pagan community slide, but hey this thread seemed appropriate for me to have a rant.

Why not say "contains people in their birthday suits and a blood thirsty bonfire" instead of implying that pagans are all driven by sacrificing virgins.
 
It annoys me when they say that. Are people that stupid these days to not to be able to think for themselves what a films about especially by title alone?

It would be better to get rid of this PC crap and go back to the good old days.
