exactly how common is it for chefs to spit on or do nasty things to food at restaurants?

as someone who has worked in the industry, it's more common than you might think. I don't think about it though, I still have to eat...
 
well from working in rest restaurants Alto of my working years .i would have to say most likely 95% of the time . most cooks don't like to think there wrong about any thing ,or thieve put in a16 hour day and its near the end of there shift .
