I have a maltese girl 6 months and she is not fixed, I noticed how much people talk of getting them fixed, however I had not planned to. Me and her stay home together all day, I'm always with her and we have a small enclosed yard (althought she usually sticks to around the door and doesnt even travel to the fence end's) I KNOW she will not be around any males. I had no intentions of getting her fixed, but I was wondering (here's the question finally) are there any other health reasons as to why they should be neutered other than getting pregnant?
ok thanks, and no I had not FULLY decided, I was debating, I had not orginially wanted to.. mainly because shes I'm guessing almost done growing, and she weighs 5 pounds, but shes a lil chubby already, she LOVES food and will eat as much as you will feed her. I have heard that a lot of spayed dogs gain weight and I don't want her to be unhealthily obese..but I do not want her to get cancer =[

No uterus, no chance of cancer.

Spaying her will also alleviate the hormonal imbalance she will experience when she goes into heat every 6 months.

While you THINK she will not be around any males, when she's in standing heat, males will do ANYTHING (Including tear your fence apart) to get to her. If you eliminate the chance by spaying her, you eliminate ALL possibilities of an unplanned litter.

Spaying will prevent cancer, and will also make her personality better. Especially with female dogs, their personalities can change depending on what part of the cycle she's in.

Even if your yard is enclosed, she could find a way out, or other dogs could find a way in. Dogs can even breed THROUGH chain link fences.

It's better to just do it now while she's young then waiting until she has mamary tumors or ovarian cancer. (There's also an infection that when they hit their first heat, their uterus fills with puss. Don't remember the name of that, though.)

Add: Spaying a dog won't make her obese. :) Just get her exercise, and make sure she's eating the right amount of a quality food, and she'll stay at a great weight.

First, even though you are with your dog all the time, remember that every six months, she will have a bloody discharge (on her beautiful white fur) for 3 weeks. You will have blood spots all over your house and your sweet girl. Second, every time she goes into heat, every un-neutered male in the neighborhood will come calling. A friend of mine breeds/shows aussies, and the last time one of her girls was in heat, several of these males gathered around the outside of her house howling at around 2 am- every night- for 3 weeks. Third, read all the questions on here about the dogs that "accidentally" got pregnant- another dog came through the fence, their friends dog got to it, their mother was watching the dog, etc., etc., etc., the stories are endless- and being that small- she would probably not survive a pregnancy without c-section from any dog not pre-selected for small size. Fourth, read this article:

It's better for everyone involved if you spay your little girl- it saves headaches for all of you!

Any cancer associated with the female reproductive system will be pretty much eliminated by spaying your female. And many people believe their dog will not be around males, but accidents do happen. I had my female spayed at 5 months and there was absolutely NO downside to having this done.

Besides cutting down on cancers, even though you have a fence and you're positive she will not escape, you can't depend on male dogs not breaking into your fence and mating with her anyway.
