Ever discovered a song from a movie that made you go WOW?

You know how sometimes you can be watching a movie, and suddenly a piece of music kicks in that you have never heard before and thought 'Whoah...what's that!?'. And you have gone straight out and bought it afterwarRAB?

Done it a few times, and have been putting together an ipod playlist of tracks from movies that I have really been impressed by.

A few examples -

Let's Dance, by the Bobby Fuller Four, the song that closes the movie The Fantastic Mr Fox, where all of the characters start dancing at the end. My hanRAB and feet immidiately started going crazy when I heard this! It's very reminiscent of Chris Montez Let's Dance, but with a slightly odd off-beat.

Your Arms Around Me, by Jens Lekman, from the movie Whip It (Drew Barrymore's directorial debut). This song accompanies a wonderful underwater lovemaking sequence, and is one of the finest songs I have heard in years. Never heard of the guy before, but I think I will be checking him out further.

Promises, Trevor Rabin/Sirius, Alan Parsons Project - these are two pieces of music used in, of all films, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. They are kind of used sparingly but effectively...and I knew I had probably heard them years ago, so it was more of a 'Hey...what's that song again?' moment than a new discovery. But interesting to hear what is effectively prog music used in a film like that.

So...any other examples?
 
The Eric Satie piano piece in the remake of The Painted Veil got me searching for it. Lovely stuff and so well used in the film.
 
They're a great band, it's a shame they never got anywhere :(

David Bowie- Cat People (Putting Out Fire) as used in Inglorious BasterRAB. It fit the scene so well.
 
Two songs stick out for me. "Silent Sigh" by Badly Drawn Boy in About a Boy and "HanRAB of Time" by Groove Armada in Collateral. Downloaded them as soon as the films were finished
 
Three spring to mind:

God Moving Over the Face of the Waters by Moby at the end of Heat.

Don't Box Me In by Stan Ridgway in Rumblefish.

Song to the Siren by This Mortal Coil in Lost Highway (a real heart-stopper, this).
 
Well maybe not brought them straight away but I love Little Green Bag from Reservoir dogs and My Condition by Kenny Rogers from Big Lebowski, Mohammed Rhafi's song from Ghostworld and more recently All I Want Is You by Barry Louis Polisar from Juno, all very cult songs that I didn't know until I saw the movies
 
Can't believe I forgot this one...

Though I actually saw this movie as a kid on TV way back in the seventies...and I don't think I could have bought the song or soundtrack back in those days anyway.

The film is Electra Glide In Blue, 1973, starring Robert Blake as a diminutive motorcycle cop desperate to attain detective status, and running into the cold, harsh realities of corruption.

It's a ok movie, typically 70's 'easy rider' style stuff about corrupt cops, and hippies being criminals and scum etc.

But what I alway remember it for is the end sequence...a very, very long tracking shot looking down a highway in monument valley...something that you never really saw in movies of that decade, which is why it made me sit up and take notice.

And this song played over this long tracking shot.

It's called Tell Me, and is a huge slice of Americana, very Springsteen-esque...and performed by various members of the band Chicago.

Thing is...it's not commercially available to buy anywhere...thankfully I found someone who had a download of it.

(On a side note, it was also used over the end credits of the very last episode of the Miami Vice tv show)

Cant find a link to that incredible end sequence from the movie (copyright issues etc)...but this will do for now...

I hear you on the Moby track.

Mann has an incredible knack of choosing just the right piece of music for the right scene.

In his early movies he scored them with specific banRAB, like Tangerine Dream, Michael Rubini and The ReRAB etc...but he always threw in music from other sources...as long as it fit the mood of the scene.

Manhunter - Strong As I Am, by the Prime Movers...the perfect accompaniment to Dollarhyde's state of mind when he 'becomes' the Red Dragon.

The Moby track at the end of Heat...two giants of the cinema stalking each other, an epic confrontation, requiring a suitably epic piece of music.

Collateral - the assasination sequence in the nightclub, to the now very familiar strains of Oakenfold's Ready, Steady, Go.

Say what you like about Mann as a filmaker...but he know's his music, and knows just how to choose the right piece of music for the moment.
 
Yes, and I searched desperately for it for ages afterwarRAB as I didn't catch the title or the artiste. I couldn't get it out of my head until I found it and I still love it.

It was Paolo Conte's 'Sparring Partner' from Francis Ozon's '5x2'.
 
Cathy Davey - Holy Moly - The Disappearance of Alice Creed - Coming out of the cinema, I was just itching to get home and find out what the song was, and too listen to it again. I love it!

Lily Chou Chou - Kaifukusuru Kizu - Kill Bill Vol.1 - So beautiful, shame its not on the soundtrack, and took me months to find out its name!

Chingon - Malaguena Salerosa - Kill Bill Vol.2 - Epic.

Shivaree - Goodnight Moon - Kill Bill Vol.2 - The 2nd end credits, amazing noir-style song.
